The Volunteer London Reviews

Nice atmosphere, not staff. - I used to go to the Volunteer pretty regularly a few months ago, and I went again after ages yesterday. The atmosphere is nice, to be fair - in summer the sidewalk in front is full of people holding their drinks and in winter, there's the odd group of people having a smoke. They have a good selection of beers. What I am less than happy about however, is the service of the bar staff. One of the earlier reviewers said that they were very good when she organised a party - well let's face it, not everyone organises a party, and for the evening drink or two the staff could be more pleasant. I think the biggest issue is their staff turnover - every time you go, it's a different set of faces, mostly. As a result, they don't build a rapport with customers and rarely have I seen a smile. Over the weekends, it gets especially crowded (it's one of the better bars in the area, which is mostly residential) and I have waited 20 minutes to get a drink - I kid you not. A lot of MBA students from London Business School frequent the place as it's just next door. I don't go there much anymore, especially if I have a choice and never on the weekends.

Perfect place for Groups! - I can't begin to tell you how pleased I was with the space and the staff at The Volunteer. I hosted a 40 person party and called a few weeks in advance to reserve a spot and pre-order some food. They staff was very friendly and attentive and called to follow-up on the booking. On the day of the party we realized we'd be over 30 minutes late and they still didn't have a problem reserving our spot. The food was ready on time and there was never a shortage of drinks at our table. All in all a GREAT place for an event with such nice people. I can't wait to go back!

sticky toffee pudding...? - I went here for a few drinks with friends, and was pretty happy with the range and quality of booze.

As my stomach started to rumble I had a look and the impressive looking (pub) menu.

I opted for the chicken and ham pie, which was very nice (none of this puff pastry rubbish). Unfortunatly it came with a pitiful helping of (albeit, pretty good) mash and veg. Tasty, but for the best part of a tenner (for pub food) I dont really want to be left hungry.

To combat this feeling of emptiness I decided to have a desert; sticky toffee pudding. Sponge based deserts are quite obviously a filler, but alas, as tasty as it was, another small portion, and 1/4 spoon of ice cream that came with it is not even worth talking about. And it was £3.50 for the pleasure of the second dissapointment.

Overall; a good pub, nice crowd, good drinks and menu, but you better order some sides if you want to full. Rating would have been a 4 if the portion size was worth the cash paid...
