Al Forno serves a variety of authentic Italian and seafood dishes at their restaurant such as pasta and pizza cooked in a wood oven. They provide outside seating on the pavement weather permitting.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Al Forno in Putney has recently gone through a bit of a refurb, which has cleaned up the interior, but sadly has done little to improve the patchy quality of their culinary offerings.

A pretty bog-standard Italian restaurant offering pizza, pasta and grilled stuff, it's one of a small chain, with branches in Kingston, Wimbledon and possibly some other places I have no interest in researching.

Pizzas are good; large and topped with good fresh ingredients. they're made in full view of the punters.

Pasta is generally very good indeed, with a decent selection of the usual suspects. Great carbonara and a really nice primavera.

Grilled...stuff is less good and less consistent. One day a chicken breast will be perfectly cooked and sauced nicely, the next time the same dish is ordered it might come out looking and tasting as though it's been sitting under the grill for a week, and be accompanied by a glutinous mess of a sauce. Veal gets the same treatment and a saltimboca alla Romana might be delicious one day and like shoeleather the next.

Grills (and fish dishes, which I hesitate to try) are served with sauteed potatoes liberally salted and sprinkled with copious amounts of rosemary. They taste good enough, but...it's not enough to redeem the random quality of the cooking when it comes to steaks and chicken.

So...a convenient (for me) Italian, where a pasta dish or a pizza (especially the calzone)will usually be good enough to send me home happy, but where the meaty and fishy treats are a sort of restaurant Russian roulette.

A nice touch though is the little shot glass of limoncello that arrives with your bill. 23-12-08
