Watchers and the Watched - I believe it was RL Stevenson who wrote that Edinburgh's folklore, by virtue of survival of the fittest, had become a work of art in its own right. Well there is money to be made in tours through the dark side and Mercat have been doing it for longer than the rest.

You want drama ? they've got grand guignol but tours are carefully constructed and the theatricals are introduced to form judicious punctuation in the narrative thread,rather than dominating it. There are frights to be had and you won't necessarily see them coming.The selling point for me was the effortless knowledge of the guides. Every Mercat Tour is firmly rooted in material fact. They know and love their city.
