The Mango Tree London Reviews

3rd time a charm? - That’s assuming I go back a 3rd time as times one and two weren’t good enough. This is supposedly one of the better restaurants in Victoria which doesn’t say much (Why aren’t there more good restaurants in the area as it seems to be the new business hub with companies moving there who have outgrown their old offices including my company?) Both times I’ve gone with a fairly large group. The menu is extensive and actually impressive with every Thai dish you can think of. The problem is the food just isn’t tasty enough as you’d expect from a restaurant like this, one that’s more up-market than most Thai places. The atmosphere is good – very modern-chic – unless you’re at the large round table in the back where you’re against a white wall with no art or colour on it. The staff are friendly but always seem confused and frantic and don’t make you feel at ease.

So back to the food. This last time we did the tasting menu for £40 for 5 courses. The starter was fun and interesting: build your own salad cups with ginger, lime, chilli, onion, peanuts, dried shrimp, coconut and a fish sauce. Most people didn’t like theirs. The second course was fish skewers with peanut sauce and a spicy vegetable broth. The broth was so spicy you coughed when swallowing (and I like very hot dishes)and the fish was overcooked so you had to drown it in the peanut sauce to make it taste decent. At this point we had been there for almost 2 hours so we asked is they could bring the next 2 dishes together. They did but it took another 30 minutes. Chicken Pad Thai inside an egg-omelette which was good and then a Thai Bento plate which consisted of vegetables, rice and prawn red curry. Again, the prawns were overcooked and the rest nothing to write home about. Same with the coconut rice with mango dessert. Not worth the calories. Most people didn’t eat it.

So we all left full yet disappointed.

Glengarry Glen Gai - All I can say about Mango Tree is what a sales team. I’d be willing to suffer through another mediocre but serviceable meal just to watch these guys work. Serious upsell. Let me sum this up with one incident, which pretty much represents the fleecing of the evening’s outing.

A colleague asked for a cognac after dinner, and rather than bringing the menu, the waiter suggested a 15 year label. After placing the order, the sommelier (basically the manager) approached the table and suggested that while the choice was a good one, the 30 year was even better. When we asked about the price, he indicated that it was only £3 more. SOLD! Imagine our surprise when the bill came and that glass was £25 a pop. Awesome.

Good Thai in Victoria - there isnt too many eateries in Victoria so this is a good one to know if you are in the area. They do lovely fresh Thai food, the pad thai is fantastic and so are their curries.

The ambiance is light and welcoming, and the sercice was efficient. We were there for a big group client lunch and they were very accomodating.

A taste of Thailand - The food here is great! Once you open the menu you are spoilt for choice which is good as you can go back again and again and not worry about having the same dishes twice. The service was excellent and the waiters were very polite and genuine. I am not much of a meat fan and the menu complimented my taste as I went for the Swordfish. The restaurant is roomy and bright and is a must for Thai food fans.
