Bermondsey Kitchen London Reviews

Flabby Pork Belly... - The Bermondsey Kitchen is an informal, bright space, serving up modern British cuisine. We were attracted by positive reviews, news of locally sourced ingredients and a daily changing menu.

Overall then, we were a bit dissapointed - the food was good, not amazing or anything, but good. I had a charcuterie plate to start which was well assembled and included lomo, a Spanish cured pork fillet, which was delicious. My partner ordered rilletes - they were excellent, really quite coarse in texture (pork) with big flavour. My main dish was also good, plaice with blood orange butter and baby fennel. That blood orange butter was pure genius and is something I've actually re-created myself at home.

The big disappointment was my partners' main, roast pork belly with mashed potato and courgettes. The portion was massive and, although I am a huge portion of pork belly, it just wasn't cooked properly and therefore just seemed vulgar. I mean, the fat just wasn't crispy. Pork belly is one of the greatest of all dishes in my opinion and how they could ever consider serving pork belly with flabby fat I will never know. The mashed potato was also bland and so were the courgettes. Some herbs, citrus, hell anything would have improved things.

On a positive note, the service was excellent. Really. Our waitress was obviously experienced - charming and professional. We hardly noticed her whisking away our plates, bringing the food and topping up wine.

Overall then, although my food was enjoyable and the service great - I cannot forgive them for the pork belly fiasco. If a dish has been unsuccessful, and I mean really unsuccessful, it says a lot about a kitchen when they are prepared to serve it up anyway. And for this reason, we won't be visiting Bermondsey Kitchen again.

Good Food at BK - I've now been to Bermondsey Kitchen for breakfast and dinner (note: I'll refrain from calling it BK, cuz that just makes me think of Burger King), and on both occasions the food has been delicious and the staff has been friendly and professional.

The dinner I had recently at Bermondsey Kitchen was superb. There was one major error that I can't ignore: the house-cured olives were absolutely bizarre - they tasted like a mixture of sugar syrup and chicken broth, but not like an olive at all. Other than that, everything was expertly prepared. The bavette steak with bernaise sauce was one of the best pieces of beef I've had in London, and the portion was massive and very reasonably priced. I would go back just for the incredible steak.

Given that The Garrison is just down the street, I'm torn on which is the better breakfast option. Comparing eggs Benedicts, the true test of any breakfast place in my opinion, The Garrison wins on muffin and ham, but Bermondsey Kitchen wins the hollandaise battle by a hair. Tough call. But the moral of the story is that you have two excellent breakfast options just blocks apart in Bermondsey.
