Money to burn? - In light of the credit crunch, I won't even be venturing near this place lest I get sucked in and spend some money that I most definitely DON'T HAVE.
However if you are a girl of a certain means and you aren't feeling the financial squeeze, then the buying at Start is really good. It errs on the side of irreverent, stocking labels like Sonia Rykiel, Miu Miu, See by Chloe etc so if you're a super-slick Gucci lady then stick to Selfridges.
It's laid back and the owners dogs run about the place at most times of day. The sales staff are pretty nice, but I wouldn't say that they are the best I've ever encountered. I went in twice in two days was served by the same salesgirl. Even after having a lengthy chat with her on the first visit she made no acknowledgement on the second which isn't what you expect from a shop with this kind of vibe - I'm not being unreasonable - I worked in a similar size shop for years and if someone comes in two days in a row they get recognised.
I like the fact that despite being skewed towards high-end diffusion lines, they do pick up on some smaller, more interesting labels. I came across both jewellery brand Zoe & Morgan and bag designer Pauric Sweeney for the first time at Start and since have seen them since in bigger shops.
My top tip for Start though is head there towards the end of the sales and you can really pick up some bargains, especially if you're not a size 8. I picked up a Philip Lim dress for £80, which was an amazing bargain!
