Experience the East in NW9 - Set in the scenic London suburb of Colindale, nestled off the A5 is Oriental City: A gray and nondescript building along this busy stretch of road. But don't let appearances fool you. Inside is a hive of activity - indeed a different world awaits. Within Oriental City you will find an extensive selection of authentic Asian shops - from Chinese cookware to martial arts equipment to Asian films. You can also find a giant supermarket for all your eastern cooking needs. Upstairs you can find a selection of restaurants, but the gem of this centre is the food court. Entering it you are transported immediately to the Far East: busy, noisy with amazing smells. Numerous hawker style stalls cater for every type of food - Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Japanese, and Korean. Also available are fresh juice shakes of to quench your thirst. Order your food from one of the vendors, receive a ticket and then sit down and await number to show up on the screen above when the food is ready. I pigged out with an vast selection of Dim Sum - 5 big plates of steaming goodness cost me £12.50. My husband went for some Roti Chanai from the Indian stall - a snip at £4.50. But what really makes this place is the atmosphere – large Asian families jostle for space amongst the tightly packed tables in the centre, sharing food and stories. Chinese New Year celebrations were underway on our visit with a dragon snaking his way through the crowd and live Chinese pop music being belted out in the foyer.
Well worth the journey - you won't be disappointed.
