The core activity of Parasol unit is an outstanding exhibition programme which shows innovative and thought-provoking work by international contemporary artists. The foundation mounts three to four exhibitions a year in a variety of media: sculpture, painting, installation, video and photography, including some specifically commissioned works. Most of the exhibitions are accompanied by a publication, an artist’s monograph or catalogue, which is distributed worldwide.

Parasol Unit London Reviews

Almond, Parasol Unit and hard life - A few days ago my boyfriend left me. Anyway, I'm not here to express my grief (of course I have and impression that all men are dogs)- I'm here to share with you what inspired me to feel better.
Surprisingly, it was art. I came to conclusion that some people's lives are harder than mine.
I went to Parasol unit Gallery (foundation for contemporary art) and ...no, no, no- it wasn't compassion to people working there... It was because of works by British artist, Darren Almond.
I had a chance to see two films, a wall sculpture and black and white photos.
Anyway, I will concentrate on the films if you don't mind.
'Bearing' was a single- screen projection describing the routines of Indonesian workers in sulphur mine. hell! They could complain not me! Men work under extremely severe conditions, breathing polluted air and transport heavy loads of sulphur from a crater. But everything seems to be so natural to them.
'In the between' is a fourteen-minute screen projection being something like a trilogy. It was filmed in Tibet and was showing the world's highest train (travelling from Tibet to China) and Tibetan Buddhist monks. The contrast between industrial and spiritual life certainly inspires to reflection and deals with current problems at the same time.
Personally, I arrived at conclusion that I would like to be a Buddhist monk. Of course if it's possible.

Unfortunately the exhibition is already closed :/ Anyway, if you have a chance to see Almond's work anywhere, don't hesitate to do that! And Parasol Unit is also a really nice art space.
