Soured Milk - I used to be a regular at The Tea Rooms almost since it opened.
My sister and I would take my mother (who is wheelchair bound after suffering a major stroke) and we would enjoy some tea and cake.

However, a few months ago, we arrived outside the shop fifteen minutes before their closing time. We walked in, sorted my mother out, taking her hat and coat off and removing her foot rests etc. There were very few customers in the shop, a couple at one table and a gentleman who had walked in minutes before us. He ordered his tea then sat at an adjacent table .
My sister walked up to the counter, minutes after this gentleman but she was told the shop was now closed. This was ten minutes before closing.
The sign on the door says they close at six but what they obviously mean is they close at a quarter to six.
As we were wheeling my mother out, the waitress walked right past us with a tray of tea and cake for the gentleman on the next table!!

The next day, I spoke to the owner on the telephone with regard to what happened and explained that it would not have put them out to have served us our tea, especially as they had not even served the other customer with his order at that point.
She told me that they need time for their staff to tidy up (however, forty five minutes later as we passed the shop on our way home, they were still tidying).
I was also told in no uncertain terms that "it's my shop and I will run it how I like".
Yes, this shop may serve nice tea and cake, however, their uncaring attitude has soured our opinion of them to a point that we no longer frequent this establishment.
Stoke Newington Church Street is not short of tea rooms and we have since found other nice tea places that welcome us right up to their time of closure. 28-04-11
