Macondo London Reviews

Spanish breakfasts - This is one of the small restaurants in Camden Passage, it has gone through a number of iterations but this one seems to have found a niche.

The general atmosphere is laid back and it seems to be a place to go to read, chill, have a drink and a bit to eat.

I went for breakfast and was surprised to see that the menu has a Spanish/Mexican vibe. You can have ham and eggs but it comes with a bean sauce for example.

I went for a conventional yoghurt, fruit and granola breakfast and was not disappointed. It is simple dish that was simply delivered. The fruit was fresh, the granola was delicious and didn't seem to be out of a packet.

It is not going to be the right place for every occasion but it has its own lazy charm and character.

Let them eat cake? Let me eat cake! - I was summoned to Macondo by a friend this afternoon: she was walking by, talked herself into having cake, and then refused to go through with it on her own. She must needs have company, and that company must needs be mine. So this is a cake and coffee only review: I didn't try anything else, though the rest of the lunch food in the window did look passably tasty.

But oh, what cake! What coffee! My enormous piece of cake was a variation on Tarta de Santiago, a traditional cake from northern Spain, and one of my favorites. Theirs was strongly inspired by angel food cake (oh so fluffy), and then almondy and orangey and rich. It alone was worth the command performance. The strong, dark coffee was also excellent. My friend seemed well pleased by her chocolate cheesecake, also big enough to prop open a door with. There appeared to be about 15 choices of cake today, all towering, many creamy.

Other details: The place was packed the whole time we were there; the waitress was snippy and forgot the cake half of our order (defeating our purpose for being there); the vibe buzzy but comfortable; the look all sleek wood, terracotta, and old Moroccanish rugs; and the soundtrack clever, modern, laid back Latin music. The price may not be for the faint of heart, or mere cake dilettantes.

But: I shall return with triumph, whenever I next suffer the dread pangs of a cake craving demanding sweet satisfaction.

If all else fails, order cake - Macondo is a newbie to the growing number of new openings in Islington. The location is superb being in pedestrian-only Camden Passage, off of the busy Upper Street. It's an odd type of business really: art, bar, cafe, coffee house, lunch place, breakfast joint, but it seems to work and it's always busy when I go there. Their cakes are amazing. Huge slices of everything from chocolate cheesecake to brownies to cookies to carrot cakes. The flavours change daily but they have all been good, or the one's I've tried.

Their lunches are Spanish although their menu also carries Mexican-type dishes like Huevos Rancheros for breakfast or quesadillas. I've had their Spanish Tortilla which was gigantic and really good. They have a window display full of daily lunch items.

It's a good place to stop in for a fun cocktail, glass of wine or hot drink after some shopping and people watch (if you can get a table outside). The service is the let down though: slow, always out of something and forgetful of the basics (I always seem to have to remind them to bring my tap water).
