The Pandora Inn Newquay Reviews

Get away from City life.... - Once you actually find the Pandora Inn in Cornwall, hidden away behind a series of narrow country lanes, you will be rewarded with a fabulous ye olde thatched roof pub with views across Mylor harbour.
In warmer times, you can sit out front and admire the sailboats, and when it's colder you can curl up inside in one of the many snug corners and fireplaces. Tall people watch out for the low ceiling beams, although amusingly the ceiling at the entrance has been padded due no doubt to numerous accidents in the past.
The Pandora offers a good selection of Cornish ales and a mediocre selection of wines and beer. However the atmosphere and views make up for this.
Food is served both in the bar downstairs and in the restaurant upstairs. We ate upstairs one evening and it was a meal of two halves - a starter of seared scallops was lovely, but it all went downhill from there. My main of sea trout had far too many flavours going on, having been stuffed with a mixture of aubergine, goats cheese and herbs - completely unnecessary, they should have let the fish do the talking. My husband’s fillet of beef was requested medium rare and arrived completely well done - very poor. A dessert of Pimms jelly was lovely light and refreshing, whilst my husband’s chocolate cheesecake looked like the tub of dog food we had served our puppy that morning.
As we rather like the Pandora, we came back a few days later and sat outside ordering from the bar menu. What a difference! Cornish crab sandwiches were made from freshly baked bread stuffed full of the whitest lightest crab meat, served with some crisps and coleslaw. The Pandora should play on its strengths - a good old fashioned country pub serving good simple food made with the best local ingredients. Upstairs the chef is trying too hard and unfortunately he is just not good enough. Stick to the simple offerings and you'll enjoy the best of this little hideaway.
