Can you guess why I'm smiling? - Austere. Formal. Simple. Tiny. Fantastic food, and even more attentive service. Cheap.
We set off, full of curiosity and powerfully hungry, after a stray reference on the Guardian's website, in a blog about recession restauranteering. "All the critics had a total love-in for the Giaconda Dining Rooms." A quick google search seemed to confirm it, with not a complaint to be spotted. It was good we'd made a reservation, or we'd have been as foiled as all the others who came hopefully through the door, spotting the restaurant half empty (that is, there might have been room for another 15 patrons. Like I said, tiny.)
It turns out I do have a complaint: There wasn't a single main dish suitable for vegetarians when I was there. I hope their menu changes frequently. I was able to cobble together a big meal from two starters--a creamy egg/spinach gratin, and a cold beet/fennel/fresh herbs/chevre mousse salad. They were both separately quite nice, and though I can't say that the pairing led to them adding up to more than the sum of their parts, that sum was still rather high.
And that leads to compliments. They had lovely, internally coherent dishes, with very nice presentation. The fizziest fizzy water I've ever seen, complimentary with our £1 cover charge (as were bread, butter, and olives.) And to finish, miraculous coffee and chocolate truffles.
And that's it. We were relaxed and cozy, we were content and stuffed, and our bill for two was £43, including two glasses of wine and two cups of coffee. We shall return!
