Southeastern Trains London Reviews

No service over Christmas? FFS. - This is probably more of a rant than a review. Ho hum.

I’ve lived on a SE-Train line since September. My train is late almost every morning, it’s always rammed to the rafters and it trundles towards London Bridge, periodically stopping for a bit of a rest, without a care in the world.

I’ve lost count of the times that I’ve waited at London Bridge for more than half an hour, being shunted from one platform to the next, as trains break down or blow up or are delayed by the ‘wrong kind of rain’.

All of this I accept as being part and parcel of commuting. I always carry a book and an ipod, so I’m usually able to make my own entertainment while I’m stranded.

My house-mate is less impressed. She wrote a strongly worded letter, in the style of Mrs Outraged from Tunbridge Wells, and all she got back was a standard letter vaguely apologising, but not actually admitting any liability.

I am slightly more annoyed with SE Trains today after learning that there will be no trains on the 27th, as they’ll be carrying out engineering works. I have to be in Paddington for 10am, to catch a train to Devon. I am already looking forward to leaving my house at 7:30 and making my way into town, on the bus.

This morning, I also learned that they will be running a Saturday service tomorrow. WHY? It’s a normal working day for everyone else. When making holiday arrangements, my organisation have to ensure that they have adequate cover in order to provide services. Why should SE-Trains be any different?

I appreciate that I run the risk of turning into a daily-mail-esq ranter, here, so I’m going to stop.

In signing off, I would like to advise all North of the River based Tipped readers never, ever to underestimate your fortune in using the Tube as your primary transport method. If you ever think about moving South, RECONSIDER.

Losing track - It's always nice when a train gets one to a destination on time, but it's nicer when that journey is accompanied by a little customer service.

I take the train to and from either London Victoria or London Blackfriars to the Maidstone East station about once a month.

I find it very annoying that the station names are rarely announced and that the lit up train station list which flows across the small screen on each train car is rarely working. This is a major inconvenience at night when the windows are dirty and it's difficult to see the names of the station stops.

It is also inconvenient when trying to relax and travel with eyes shut and snoozing. It's easy to lose track.

It is also annoying that it's possible to travel without anyone ever looking at a ticket.

However, I have always appreciated the courteous service I've received in ticket offices and on platforms at Blackfriars and Maidstone East. The train often requires a stop at Bromley South and I think the platform staff at that station is the friendliest in all of England (except for at Pret a Manger on Fleet Street).

I've had some frustrating experiences at London Victoria with staff who don't seem to know from which platforms the trains run.
