Min Jiang London Reviews

Atrocious service - Min Jiang aims to be an upscale Chinese restaurant in London. To start with the positive, it has reasonable food, a nice ambience and lovely views over London. The speciality is Beijing duck which has to be preordered and is the posh version of crispy duck (which doesn't exist in Asia and was invented by Chinese restaurants here). This is served in 2 courses - the first is the duck skin served in pancakes. This was OK but served with lots of the meat attached to bulk up the serving - definitely not for the traditionalists (I lived well in Asia for many years and ate this frequently)- but I prefer this as it is less fatty. The second course of duck (on lettuce, as recommended by the waitress)was so miniscule I'm not quite sure why they even bothered to serve it up. Good quality ingredients were used and the dishes ranged from nice to rather unexceptional (avoid the dull speciality red bean pancakes and sesame glutinous balls in peanut desserts). Prices are commensurate with the setting and location. The huge disappointment was service. Minor things - eg.drinks from the bar were not brought to the table unless we did it ourselves, staff evacuating at closing time and tables being cleared and set up(the restaurant was empty) whilst we waited patiently for dessert menus - to inexcusably unprofessional behaviour when the waitress actually argued that we had not preordered the duck, asking for names of whom we had spoken to etc, without first checking the booking. No acknowledgment of her mistake or apology was forthcoming when she was eventually persuaded to make her checks. Very unpleasant and embarrassing in front of guests. This restaurant is a branch of one in Asia which I happily frequented years ago. London needs an upscale Chinese and I really wanted to like this but came away hugely disappointed.
