Sarastro is based in the heart of Theatreland and is ideal for pre and post theatre dining, serving a variety of Mediterranean dishes with a Turkish Cypriot slant in a great atmosphere. The restaurant is much like a theatre itself, with its balcony seats, a royal box, a dress circle and stall seats. They have opera showing from 8.30pm on Mondays and Sundays. The staff are polite and efficient. Catering for private parties of up to 120 guests is available upon request.

Sarastro London Reviews

Atmospheric delight - I was recommended Sarastros by a friend who thought I would love it and they were right, the food is nothing special I suppose, but the decor is to die for! The place has a wonderful atmosphere that reminds me of an opera house backstage. We also were treated to performances from a top class violinist and opera singers, this is a must visit for music fans!

Kooky and confused - I visited Sarastro with friends for an impromptu Friday night meal in Covent Garden. We arrived around 8pm - there were plenty of tables available downstairs but the 'balcony' tables were all reserved. This place gets top marks for crazy decor. It is designed to look like a theatre, with balcony booths ornately decorated with gold trim. The outside of the restaurant looks like a granny's cottage garden. It is tackiness to the extreme, and it was unsuprisingly full of tourists. The food was ok, but not very exciting mediterranean fare. I had fried calamari - simple and done well but it was crying out for aioli. My main course was steak, which was tasty and cooked perfectly. But bland vegetable sides made the meal pretty uninteresting. The highlight was the chilli dip they serve with crudites as an appetizer. We order serveral additional servings of the dip! Service was terrible - they were prompt at taking the order but then it was almost impossible to attract someones attention unless it was to pay. So I won't be going back and I do not recommend it unless you've got friends visiting and they would find it interesting (or just tacky)!

A jolly way to end the week! - Sarastro was a last minute choice for supper last night - and whilst I remember it being fun and quirky the first time, Sunday nights surpass expectations!

For anyone who enjoys opera (and even those who are not particularly interested), this place is a must. The decor is so quirky - you are greeted by a monstrosity 'creation' when you arrive (it has to be seen to be believed) and the most artistic obscene material on the walls of the bathroom I have ever seen.

Food was also great - Turkish. Mixed Mezze is a sound choice, although our order was wrong for main course (which isn't great) it didn't really matter.

During dinner you will be sereneded by your favourite well-known opera arias, which is why it's so fun even if you aren't a hardcore opera buff.

The atmosphere is so wonderfully friendly and lively - book for Mondays and Sundays but I would highly rate this.

2 courses and wine came to £28 per person, which is great value including the live music.
