Jorvik Viking Centre is owned by the York Archaeological Trust and was set up in 1972. It was set up primarily to safe guard the recent findings of the well preserved Viking town of Yorvik, which had been buried in the mud for over 1000 years. The Jorvik Centre is much more than a history lesson - they offer each visitor the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a archaeological dig, and let them handle their own archaeological findings.
