Levantine London Reviews

*doors shuttered* Under refurb??? - It is so hard to review Levantine. Everything about this restaurant had potential to be great, but it all fell short. The atmosphere: hip, good music, comfy pillows, flowy fabcic. However, the cushions and seat at our table were stained and had mushed food. Thanks to our kids dropping everything on the floor we saw the inkiness under the tables. The place seemed to be in need of a good cleaning. The coolest part of the restaurant is the walk down to the loo, complete with Mediterranean tile and a reflecting pool filled with fresh flowers. The food: unique with ingredients like pumpkin and pomegranate featured in new ways. Everything we ate was delicious (especially the chicken pastry and the lamb cutlets) but initially we were served undercooked sausages, scary! Although we loved the aforementioned lamb cutlets of the three on the plate one was scorched beyond recognition, one was perfect, and one was very rare. If you want Edgware fare with more hip flare than you may truly enjoy Levantine. However, if you are at all picky or persnickety than you may just want to pass.

Small and unorganised - I can appreciate it's the holiday season and it's a VERY busy time of year however we had a very undesierable experience last week with Levantine (Dec 13th 07). After calling several places which were booked (inlucding Levantine's sister and better known restaurant, Levant - who said no availabiilty and hung up), we found that Levantine had availability via it's own website booking engine, Live Booking. So we booked for 8pm, arrived on time to find the restaurant apcked (it's only one room) and they had no reservation for us. The first waitress we spoke to was so rude and unhelpful, as if it wasnt her problem. We said we would stand and wait for a table (as we knew full well we would find nothing elsewhere available and werent in the greatest part of town, Paddington). She said fine "if we wanted to be pushed around all night," which we found extremely rude! We finally spoke to a manager and she was much more understanding of the predicament but still had no table. We agreed to go have a drink in a grotty pub across the street and she would ring my mobile when she had something. 1 hour and 45 minutes later we finally got a table. The manager, the staff (including the previously rude one) were all apologetic and polite but by then we were so hungry we barely tasted the food as it went down. It could have otherwise probably been a perfect night out, only other disappointment, no belly dancers like at Levant, but maybe they dont want to be pushed around all night! :) Lesson learned, only go when it's quiet or you are 100% guarenteed a reservation.
