J Restaurant London Reviews

SHOCKINGLY APPALLING SERVICE!!! - This is definitely not the place to be if you want a pleasant meal in your neighbourhood.

The service was appalling- do NOT expect any of the staff to be friendly.

We expressed our dissatisfaction to the manager (who was supposedly serving us) about the incessant dragging of chairs and general bad service and told her we would not come back to the restaurant- only to be have comments like:

'I don't care if you don't come back, this is MY restaurant! You CHOSE to come here!' - thrown back at us.

-NEVER AGAIN.
-A disgusting air of arrogance
-It is unbelievable that in this day and age, restaurant owners/ mangers still think that they can treat customers so poorly and think that they can get away with it without getting a bad review.

Leaves a bitter taste! - As a loyal customer for many years, I booked a table for 4. Not having been there for 6 months I didn’t expect any major changes to detract from the experience. This was sadly not the case.

- Upon arrival (on-time) and having booked a table well in advance, we were made to wait for a table despite a table for 4 sitting empty for over 10 minutes. Another table eventually cleared next to this table and we were able to sit down, still with that table empty.

- When ordering the wine, I selected a familiar Barbera d'Alba. A completely different bottle was brought to the table. I queried this and was assured twice it was ‘the same wine’ simply with an updated label. One of my guests knows that region well and pointed this was completely untrue and that the imposter wine actually comes from over 800 kms away.

- We ordered a side order of rosemary bread. It was presented void of any rosemary and a little stale. When pointing out the absence of rosemary, the waiter assured us the brown specs were rosemary and there was nothing wrong with the dish. It neither smelt or tasted of rosemary because it was onion! When a replacement came, it arrived with rosemary and looked nothing like the original – no comment from the waiter.

- The tuna main course dish was not fresh, its smell camouflaged by the over use of crushed pepper. The offending tuna steak led to all the symptoms you’d expect a few hours after leaving the restaurant.

This is a disappointing reflection of a venue we used to frequent. For a meal that cost well over £100 it left everyone highly unimpressed.

Worst Italian Ive ever been to - Went there twice - once for a pasta dish and once for a pizza, which I heard good things about. The first vist my pasta (arribiata with grilled chicken, my chicken was undercooked and the pasta was luke warm, the very very rude manager (or owner) said 'we are very busy' and huffed and puffed when I showed him it was undercooked. Eventually I got my dish 25 mins later whilst my girlfriend had finsihed hers and I didnt even get an apology. I went back again (dunno why) for a pizza, it came without any cheese, so I called over the again very rude and arrogant italian manager and he explained that I didnt ask for cheese, sorry - its a pizza do I have to request cheese on it! In not so many words told me it would take over an hour to get my pizza and basically f off your not getting it. I will never go back, he was the most rude, arrogant, aggressive man who shouldnt be head of hosue in a restaurant, its not like its a world class italian where he has the right to be arrogant, its a tiny cramped cafe type restaurant which doesnt serve good food and the staff are rude beyond belief.

RUDE, RUDE, RUDE STAFF - The food is OK but why oh why are the staff so unbelievably and consistently rude and unhelpful?

Last week I went in there at 9.00am when they had just opened. The place was absolutely empty apart from the waiter. I was by myself but wanted a table for four so that I could spread out my newspaper whilst eating breakfast.

The waiter said that I must sit at one of the small tables for two people. I looked around in disbelief and asked again if I could have the table for four since I was just having a quick breakfast and would be out within a half an hour. Oh no, I could not, was his abrupt and unapologetic response. Why? Because those were the rules that the owner had set.

Naturally I walked straight out and vowed never to return again. It was straight out of a Monty Python sketch.

This is not the first time the staff have been rude. In fact, there rudeness is well known amongst the locals who, it seems, are boycotting it in droves - as I now will.

What a strange way to run a business.

Consistent, quality and affordable - I guess if you have a bad experience in a restaurant you are motivated to write about it, and perhaps a little less motivated if it is goog. But I thought I should put forward my experiences to bring some balance to what I can see being said. I visit J's in Primrose Hill very regularly, at least once weekly, sometimes more. My only complaint is that I can easily gain weight if I order too much of their gorgeous pasta's and breads. I find the food to be consistently high quality, much better than most other Italian restaurants or chains. I cannot believe anyone could accuse them of being over priced - you can order two courses and a glass of wine for £7.95 and the selection of dishes on this set menu is enormous. there are other set menus to choose from. I find it excellent value and a wonderful lunchtime treat. I find the waiters extremely friendly and hospitable. They occassionally show their appreciation with a free Grappa or spirit, which is always welcome. If you have visited once and have had an experience that didn't match your Gorodon Ramsey expectations then I think you are missing out - J's is a very affordable restaurant with consistently high quality genuine Italian food. It is, as another reviewer has stated, a little gem. Do visit it and see for yourself.

food poisoned!! - After seeing the restaurants nice exterior and the numerous diners already eating my husband and i decided to pop in for saturday brunch.
The manager had an air of extreme arrogance and entitlement, the kind one might encounter in Paris but rarely encounter here in London.
The food looked reasonable on other diners tables. My scrambled eggs and salmon arrived with the eggs looking white and anemic. Being hungry however I ate a good portion of them. I have been in bed since with acute food poisoning.
I would advise anyone with an instinct for self-preservation to stay far away from this place, I have reported them to the council and hope that they wont be able to repeat their feat on any other unassuming customers.

The worest experience! - We were absolutely shocked by the horrific experience we had at this restaurant, but my only consolation is the realisation that it wasn't us over reacting rather the outrageously poor concept of customer service by both the manager and the staff!
Rant over - let me explain...
It was a beautiful summer's day in Primrose Hill and my husband and I wanted to try somewhere different. We were attracted to the menu as it had good mix of choices.
The waiters (2) seemed unable to answer basic questions on the menu and simple requests were too difficult - e.g. would it be possible to grill the seabass rather than pan fry...
We waited for almost 30mins for our starters...a soup and garlic bread. It should have been a sign of things to come...esp as the restaurant wasn't particularly busy.
When the food arrived, I requested an extra plate to enable my husband to share the garlic bread. The waitress mumbled a response that I honestly didn't hear....maybe due to the relief that the food had finally arrived! When I asked her again she walked across the floor and actually screamed at me in front of other customers that she heard me the first time! Neither myself, husband or the nearby customers could believe her behaviour! When I gently explained to her that I actually hadn't heard her, I was given a tirade of abuse. I immediately escalated to the manager who was so useless; I actually can't be bothered to type his response!
Needless to say we walked out, leaving our food untouched.
We ended up going to Artigiano in Belsize Park where we had amazing food, served by excellent staff in beautiful surroundings!

little gem - We have been to this little restaurant many times now, at different times of the day. Their lunch menu is very good value since they have various pasta and pizza at £5.95 including soft drink. You also have a choice of 2 course set menu for £7.95 including a glass of wine or soft drink.

Their evening menu is completley different their average price of pizza and pasta is £8.95 and also they offer a 2 course set menu at £8.95.
Considering that you are dinning in Primrose Hill, I find their prices to be very reasonable.

On one occassion my girl friend and I had pasta and it was delicious. On our second visit I had a pizza and my griend friend had the seabass with tiger prawns. Again we found the food to be absolutely delicious.

At the time of the paying our bill we found that the service was not included. I know that other restaurants in the area have a 10% or 12.5% service charge. Most of the waiters and waitresses are Italian, the service that they provided us was very good.

Try it.........

Avoid - overpriced and bland food - Overpriced bland food. Unhelpful service. Happy to charge £10 for a plate of pasta for a young child and quite happy to tell you that a lot of people complain about this. Clearly they must find it profitable.

I would never go back.

Visit Marine Ices down the road for far superior and reasonably priced Italian food.

Ramsay's Nightmares? Try J's. - I had the misfortune of visiting J's for lunch today with a party of colleagues and I can safely say that I have never received such abysmal service anywhere - it was like a scene out of Ramsay's 'Kitchen Nightmares'.

The menu at J's is inviting, offering authentic Italian pizzas and pastas and a selection of grills in addition to all-day breakfasts. However, this goes little way to making up for the appalling attitude of the man they call their manger.

Having waited for over an hour for our food, we gently reminded the staff that we were still awaiting two dishes. Half way through the rest of the party’s meals, these two dishes appeared only to be practically thrown at the table by the so-called manager without any recognition, let alone an apology, for the delay of any of the dishes.

To their credit, some of our party's dishes were very good but this was completely overshadowed by the horrific service. When I quietly explained to the manager that we were disappointed with the service that we had received, his response was nothing less than absurd, and I quote:

"I know your food was slow. Do you want to embarrass me by making me apologise?"

Apparently this man was above giving any form of apology for the terrible service he was providing to his customers (if you can call it service, we were not the only dissatisfied customers). In fact, he was above even speaking to them it would appear as he then proceeded to turn his back on me and shout and swear in Italian in front of the restaurant for the next ten minutes.

I find it quite incredible that this man would even consider a career in the service industry, let alone proclaim to be a manager in what actually has the makings of being a great restaurant, save for the presence this arrogant fool.

I am only grateful that we were able to walk away safe in the knowledge that we would never have to return and endure this treatment again, I just feel sorry for the poor staff that are stuck working with him. From the looks on his chefs' faces we were not the only ones whose patience was wearing thin and as for the poor waitress, I hope for his sake that she finds a way out soon before he ends up with eggs benedict on his face.

DISGUSTING - 7 of us went for my sisters 40th. my mom brought a cake and some decorations ....and thats how it all kicked off. the manager is probably the rudest person ive ever encountered in a restaurant (and i've eaten in some of the best). He got the order COMPLETELY WRONG, 3 people in my party were ill the next day, it would have been quicker to order take out from Manchester than wait for the food...i can go on and on but i think u get my point. DO NOT STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE (unless u intend to take the following day off and spending it in the toilet). you have been warned !!!!

Disappointing - On first entering the restaurant, I thought we were going to have a wonderful meal. This was not so. The food was okay, to be fair, but with so many wonderful restaurants on Regent's Park Road, this was disappointing. The cleanliness wasn't brilliant either. With this and the attitude of some of the staff, I would recommend walking past this one to one of the many nice restaurants here. I won't be returning.

This is actually at 184 Regent's Park Road.
