Aubaine London Reviews

Remarkably Average - Looks can always be deceiving and so it was with Aubaine. Attractive decor and a friendly welcome all boded well, as did the menu of up market french bistro fayre. All good so far. I love french onion soup and plumped for that as my starter followed by monk fish for main. The soup was too thick and heavy, resembling something that had come out of a packet with hot water added to it. Disapointment number one. The main course of monk fish arrived with the smallest morsels of fish clinging for dear life on top of two enormous pieces of fennel which in turn sat in a odd coloured sauce on the plate. I didn't want to be rude and finish before friend one and friend two so ate tiny mouthfuls to make the monk fish last more than 30 seconds - and at £17 there were far from satisfying.
Finally, an odd thing happened with the wine; friend one and two had half full glasses of wine while me (being the lush) had about a third in my glass. Waiter comes over to top glasses up and managed to finish the wine in the other two leaving no more for me when there was plenty to go round. I made light of it and put on a sad face :-( to the waiter who look at me, shrugged his shoulders and walked off. So as soon as we had finished and paid up that's exactly what we did.

Classy Cafe in South Ken - Aubaine is the sort of place I like to take a late (but not too late) breakfast on the weekends. A casual but high-end cafe/patisserie in South Ken, this place tends to attract handsomely dressed professionals and yummy mummy types. In front they have a great selection of pastries and coffee for take away (which you can also eat in the restaurant, of course) and towards the back is a large communal table where you can grab a seat amongst the various classy looking people nibbling at their salads and croque monsieur. There's good people watching along Brompton Road as well, and some of the desserts are to die for.
Plus, they have that amazing French butter to spread on the contents of the bread basket (I don't know how the French make their butter so creamy and delicious, but I know I like it!)
By the way, as you can see clearly on the map, Tipped is fibbing when it tells you that the closest tube is Knightsbridge - South Kensington station is only a block or two away.
