Chow ciao - Amerigo Vespucci is basically an expensive old school Italian restaurant, geared-up for business lunches and expense accounts. It was one of the first proper restaurants (as opposed to pizza or gastro pubs) to open up at Canary Wharf and it became a favorite with brokers and journalists. The food is traditional but good Italian dishes served in an intimate dining room with nice décor and reasonably attentive staff. But be prepared to sit on a table next to half a dozen drunken city brokers filling the air with expletives… which can be embarrassing if like me you take your mother there for her birthday. Mobile phones ring, people have loud conversations about “strategy” and generally speaking the place is a business venue. Which is fine. The food was good but the Dover sole was lukewarm, and when we asked them to heat it up it came back a bit singed on top and still tepid underneath, but apart from that everyone else had a nice dinner. The wine list is unusually extensive for Italian wines. Be careful because, as with all Italian wines the price doesn’t seem to relate to the quality of the wine itself – but the classic Verdiccio or Brunello won’t disappoint. Overall it’s good value, good food and reasonable service – but the atmosphere on the couple of times I’ve been there has been more “Wall Street” than “La Dolce Vita”.
