The Real Greek Souvlaki & Bar serves a selection of mezedes and souvlaki, which is very much the Greek version of street food. Mezedes are small dishes, designed to be eaten like Tapas; souvlaki are simple skewers of marinated meats that are cooked on a charcoal grill and eaten wrapped in flat bread. They also offer a range of cocktails, both traditional and with a Greek twist.

Real Greek Souvlaki & Bar London Reviews

Not very real Greek - There are no real Greek restaurants in Putney. Nor are there any strange hybrid restaurants called Acropolis or Athena selling strange moussaka-like dishes and random cuts of lamb. There is, however, a large modern place called The Real Greek on a site that used to house a Pizza Hut.

That should be a clue really. The Real Greek is to Greek food what Pizza Hut is to real pizza. It's perfectly pleasant, but it's not the real thing.

The menu consists mostly of grilled meats, salads and dips, with souvlaki being the mainstay of the main courses.

Food is pretty good on the whole, but portions are far from generous, and prices far from modest. For two people to share some (very good) flat bread and a couple of (quite pleasant) dips to start, then to have a selection of grilled stuff (with lamb chops, chicken, pork and lamb souvlaki, greek sausage, kofte and a burger sort of thing among the items on offer), maybe a little crispy whitebait or calamari, along with a Greek salad (fresh and good, but very skimpy on the feta)and a bottle of house wine to share is going to run to £60 or so...probably more if you hit the desserts and coffees.

It is quite possible to have a good 'snacky' meal though, with something like a selection of 'mini-skewers', some bread, dips and salad and a drink and get away with a bill of about £25, but it really wouldn't constitute a meal of any substance to my mind.

It's one of (I think) eight in a chain. There are promos to be had, such as a two-for-one on souvlakis with a downloadable voucher, which would certainly make it a more reasonable price. Visit their website to check on such things: http://www.therealgreek.com/index.html

All in all, decent food quite well cooked and prepared, with adequate but not outstanding service in a modern but somewhat noisy venue...

...but it's not Real Greek.
