The Museum Tavern is a small handsome pub visited by both tourists and local office workers. It is a good place to pop in for a quick drink after a day out at the museum or a hard days work. Seating on the pavement area is provided, weather permitting.

Museum Tavern London Reviews

Quaint but Almost Fatal - I had lunch there and shortly after eating felt strange . 3 hours later aboard a BA flight abck to the USA I fell ill with explosive diarrhea which continued for the next 60 hours.

AVOID THE FOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deserves Only Average Marx - I made a special trip to visit this pub, but really only people with a keen interest in socialism should bother to do so. The Museum Tavern's claim to fame is that it was, during the mid 19th century, the local pub of one Karl Marx, who supped on what was surely not an industrially manufactured beer. If the idea of sitting in the same room that the be-bearded one himself chugged brews appeals to your sense of social justice and historic materialism, then that is reason enough to visit this pub, which is located directly across the street from the British Museum (thus the name).
However, if you don't care one whit about Marx or his blasted ideas about a proletarian revolution, then there isn't all that much to recommend about this place. It's rather small and more often than not packed with American tourists - when I visited there were several groups that had apparently decided to take in the British Museum for a few minutes before heading to Heathrow - they had their massive luggage with them clogging up the passages. Some real ales are on offer, and there is a short wine list, but none of it is anything remarkable. The food, as well, is standard, so if you are looking for a bite after taking in the one-two punch combo of the Elgin Marbles and the Terracotta Warriors, you might as well look for something more impressive.
Still, if the history is meaningful for you, it's worth it to pop in for at least a drink to commune with Marx for 3 pounds a pint - I'm sure he'd have had a laugh at that!
