The Butchers Hook London Reviews

My first visit of many more - What a fantastic place! I came here on a Sunday for a long, get-over-your-hangover type lunch with a friend and was thoroughly impressed. Rustic to a point, the decor inside is something of a cross between French farmhouse and English country pub. Extremely friendly and helpful staff as well. The food, though, was very good indeed, with generous helpings. The menu has a good range of traditional English and French cuisine which works very well indeed.

Beyond gastro - When pubs first started to go gastro, however many years ago that was, they were obviously something new and exciting. That seemed to change quickly though. Distressed leather sofas against bare brick and deep red soon became the norm, and the food also blended into a Anglo-continental Asiatic standard.

The Butcher's Hook is something else, able to distinguish itself on all levels. Both pub and menu slant towards the French, a light atmosphere and satisfyingly rustic menu with frequent changes.

When I went the chef was having his night off, but no matter as his Sous was equally up to the task of three fantastic courses.

Starters came after lovely, warm, fresh bread was brought to the table, and were a good but unremarkable herb and goat's cheese salad, and a much better duck and pork terrine which, if anything, was too big. It would have done nicely as a light(ish) lunch or supper on its own but was excellent nevertheless.

Followed were a "nice" but slightly over done duck breast and, well, I don't remember a more memorable main. To say it was simply slow roast shoulder of pork with caramalsed apples doesn't begin to do it justice. Served with mash and savoy cabbage, the pork had been very roughly shredded, packed in a mold and the open end charred, resulting it soft, unctuous flesh placed on a reduction of the caramel and roasting juices. Boy! The sweet reduction and bitter char were perfect, nothing short.

I forced dessert on myself, and was glad I did. I asked our excellent waitress what the "Chocolate Assortment" consisted of and was told chocolate cake, chocolate sauce..." I stopped her there and said I'd have it. It also carried chocolate ice cream and a chocolate pot. Fantastic all and a fitting end to a great night out.
