A real izakaya-fu in central London - Imagine you are in Tokyo. Now imagine you're in a crowded business district and you see a little cafe. It's English. It's like a builder's caf. You go in and they make gorgeous strong builder's tea, really good greasy fry-ups, and toasties. The wait staff all call you 'luv'.

The Aki Bistro is the London equivilant of this experience. It's like a completely authentic Japanese country restaurant in the middle of Gray's Inn Road. The interior makes you feel like you are actually somewhere in Honshu, having a quiet lunch or dinner, and really enjoying yourself.

The food is delicious and authentic, just like your haha (mum) would make (if she were Japanese). Freshly prepared sushi (which you can see being made at the bar), as well as other authentic Japanese dishes compliment their extensive saki list. The tea is fragrant and plentiful and the staff are friendly and respond to everything by saying "yes" (because they don't speak English I suppose).

I loved being here, there is none of that kitchy irony like "look we're being autheeeeeentic", nor the pretention of "purity". It's just a lovely, lovely little find with gorgeous food and an amusingly language-barriered staff.

The only reason it doesn't get 5 discs is that it's not super cheap (for a bistro) and this is the kind of place I want to eat in three times a week.
