Japanese Canteen London Reviews

Does the job - So I live round the corner from this place and have been walking past it regularly since it first opened years ago. In fact I've even ventured in on a number of occassions but I always walk out - something just doesn't feel right.

Anyway the other night I had a few (6) afterwork beers - it was still early so I could have cooked but it would got messy so I decided to give the canteen a try.

I ordered the prawn dumplings, the pork dumplings and the chicken chilli fried rice. I got home and tucked into the dumplings and they were good - not too doughy and the ingredients tasted fresh. Then the chilli chicken rice thing and it's funny reading Andy's review below - it's not that there was anything wrong with it but when you pay for food you kind of expect it to taste better than you can make but it didn't - it was kind of salty like there was just lots of soy sauce on it.

All in all it did the job and the service was quick and good but I don't think I'd come back sober unless I really had to.

Where's the teriyaki? - The food at Japanese Canteen is good, but everything comes off as amateur, like something I might make at home and say "Hmm, well that's okay, but nowhere near as good as I can get in a restaurant." It's like a decent impostor, but not the real deal. They make rice just like I do, which is to say not very well and super gummy. The teriyaki is essentially a soy sauce, but certainly not like any teriyaki I've encountered before. The miso is passable, but kind of like a recipe from Miso for Dummies, or, more likely, just the same mix I could go buy in the supermarket.

On the plus side, everything seems fresh, the service is fast, and the donburi is reasonably priced. Skip the more expensive bento boxes, as the tiny little extra sides and the bland miso do not warrant the extra cost. They also get a few minus points for serving food in wasteful take away containers even if you eat in the restaurant.
