Slightly pricey but lovely decor - Maison Bertaux is considered a Soho institution, but what drew me to it was the window full of gorgeous cakes.

The decor didn't disappoint either - it looks like it's charmingly modelled on the boudoir of an eccentric French aunt. Dried flowers, huge empty champagne bottles, hot pink voile netting and vintage mirrors adorn the slightly shabby ground floor.

It felt incredibly cosy on a rainy afternoon, with a Bob Marley CD playing unobtrusively in the background. It may be a little too cosy for some - don't go if you like to have a private conversation with friends as everything will be heard!

I also felt that there were too many tables packed in on the ground floor - being seated in front of the till was irritating to say the least, but we moved ourselves with no problem.

The cakes and sweets (there was little in the way of savoury food) looked fantastic, if a little pricey and there was a huge selection displayed in the front window - lovers of French desserts will not be disappointed.

The one thing that really let down this charming cafe was the service. Though it was quick enough, a couple of the waiters were far from warm (to the point of surly) and it wouldn't have killed them to crack a smile.

Saying that, don't let it affect your decision to visit the charming Maison Bertaux. It's a lovely place to while away a sunny or rainy afternoon, if only to gaze at the decor and the cakes.

Take tea in Soho. - Bohemian French Pâtisserie in little old London.

Maison Bertaux in Greek street, opposite the Prince Edward theatre on Old Compton Street has been an institution of Soho Society since 1871.

You just have to trust me on this one, it's one of the coolest place to hang out in Soho - tea & coffee, and mmmmm fresh, home-made, french, full fat cakes...

Maison Bertaux 'The place to take tea in Soho' - tea leaf tea in a tea pot with a extra pot of hot water completed with a tea-strainer and jug of milk with sliced lemon on the side.

Shall I be Mother? One lump or two?
