Cecconi's London Reviews

Chic-coni's - Lovely glam restaurant in Mayfair. You can opt for a full on meal here, or just come for drinks and snacks which we did. I had been here for dinner a few years ago, but I don’t remember the decor being quite as stunning, so perhaps they have had a refurb meanwhile. Sitting at the marble bar you are transported to a glamorous hotel somewhere in Italy. This is the kind of place where you'd expect Bond to have a martini. Snacks are prepared at the bar and include a range of tasty crostini, meats and little bites like quails eggs. Order a plate or two and you'll also get a bowl of fresh mixed breads with tangy olive oil and a generous helping of olives and nuts. Cocktails are divine - we ploughed our way through the menu with gusto - a Rossini was super juicy, whilst my husband’s apple martini was just tangily perfect. The Passion fruit and chilli martini woke me up again after stuffing myself with crostini, and the Berry and Vanilla martini masqueraded as a healthy smoothie. Service from the white coated waiters was friendly and old fashioned - ladies get the full treatment here from getting helped in/out of coats and chairs, even if you are just perched at the bar! Overall I felt this place was good value considering the location - 4 strong generous cocktails, half a Peroni and a selection of crostinis cams to £47.

Prosecco from the tap! - Cecconi's is the only place that I know of where you can get Prosecco on tap. That tidbit alone is enough to make me consider this place a pretty awesome restaurant. There's something about drawing sparkling wine from a tap that ought to put me off, but instead it just really pleases me - and it helps that the prosecco is good quality as well.
Situated behind Piccadilly in Mayfair, there's no mistaking that Cecconi's is a fancy Italian restaurant, complete with white-coated waiters. The food is top notch - I had a lovely lobster spaghetti and spiced tuna tartare - and the service is quite attentive. Although when I visited they were fully booked, we were helpfully placed at the marble bar, which has an impressive view over the restaurant and the full menu available.
The clientele is a lot of Mayfair and St James types after work, segueing into a well-to-do crowd for dinner after that. Smart dressing and the odd under-dressed tourist are par for the course, and there appear to be a lot of regulars. Of special note in the cocktail crowd are the prevalence of really decadent looking drinks, from strawberry mojitos to raspberry belinis.
One of my choices for a high-end Italian restaurant, also an option for a posh, if busy, after work cocktail option.

Bond Villians eat brunch too... - Cecconi’s is like a little outpost of the Ab Fab Chelsea set, nestling discreetly off the glam end of Bond Street. It’s always packed to the gills with leggy blondes who talk like Princess Anne, red-faced middle aged tweed wearers, the odd green welly here and there and lashings of waxed raincoats. The sort of people who don’t queue, interrupt you asking if there’s a table for two in order to ask the same question for themselves. Rude people. Consider them like Bond Villains and suddenly the whole place makes sense - flamboyant, rude and definitely old school.

Dispersed in this mix are the odd celebrity, well-to-do tourists and plenty of Americans and Italians… and these last groups are the most important indicator of whether an American / Italian restaurant is any good. The food is unpretentious, excellent quality and plentiful portions. It’s not cheap, but it’s typical West-end prices and certainly not expensive by London standards. The main reason to go to Cecconi’s is a weekend brunch. You’ll probably need to book because it does get busy but you’ll understand why when you eat their cooked breakfast, which is like a very posh version of the greasy heart-attack trucker’s breakfast (which now ranks just below paedophilia as a bad thing to do with your body). Italian sausage, free range eggs, black pudding, porcini mushrooms, home made baked beans, pancetta, lashings of toast…mmmmm. Or maybe you’ll prefer the amazing fried cheese or bacon sandwich, eggs Benedict, Royale, Florentine, their excellent breakfast pastries or the outrageous French toast with fresh berries and cream. My wife had that once and very nearly married the waiter who served it. All washed down with fresh Italian coffee, juices, mineral water, mary, martini etc. The wine list caters for all wallets and like their lunch menu, is unremarkable, but full of safe, reliable choices that won’t disappoint.

In many respects Cecconi’s is like having a wealthy uncle or aunt… it’s close enough to a perfectly normal, middle of the road Italian restaurant, except with really posh stuff. The reason it remains a favourite of mine is the fact you can stay as long as you like, eat until you have to undo your belt, have a romantic brunch or a relaxed lunch with your mates on comfy seats in a great central location. Yes, you might grimace now and again as the Polo set turn up and complain about the good old days when children went to boarding school and you could get Concorde to America rather than travel with the hoi polloi on a jumbo jet, but you’ll be stuffing your face too hard to take much notice.
