Micromend London Reviews

micromend - great results - I have only had a good experience with micromend. Yes they took a while to fix my macbook but fix it they did for a very reasonable price. Before I had a dead lump of plastic, now I have a working macbook, nuff said...

Awful and cruel and mean. - I've never had a worse tech experience. These people treat their customers with incredible disdain, sneering at you merely for needing their help. They pretend that if they don't fix your problem immediately, your computer will be broken forever, then they refuse to tell you when it'll be fixed and how much it'll cost. They told me mine would need 4 hours and 120 pounds; it ended up being 6 hours and 250. The price gouging is astonishing--all they did was replace a few keys and clean the keyboard (for 250 pounds!). They yell at you if you ask questions, they're mean to you while you wait, and they double their price when you have no choice but to pay it. Horrible people at a horrible shop. Please learn from my mistake!

Effective and quick! - I had my laptop cover broken and they replace it for the new one.
The first time, the cover I gave them it was not the correct one, so they advise me on how to buy the correct one and they didn't charge me anything. Even thought they work on the laptop for a few hours.

They were quick, efficient and very professionally.

Once I got the correct cover, Larry replace it in 2 hours.

Larry was the guy who fix my problem, and who advise me.

Chat to them, they are nice blokes - My son’s ipod touch needed repairing a couple of months ago (dodgy headphone socket) and having asked around I was pointed to Micromend. Dropped it in and it was repaired, no problems the next day.
Had to take it back today as the headphone socket was dodgy again and the chaps fixed it while I waited (the socket was moving slightly in the case so the plug was not going home fully). As a previous correspondent mentions, the place is a bomb site and on the surface they can seem a little surly, but on the whole nice friendly chaps if you have a chat with them. And finally it’s nice to be able to have a modern high tech gadget repaired, for a reasonably sum, and not have to wait weeks and pay the manufacturer a fortune.

Micro Mend - My Mac needed a repair and as a local business I thought I'd try Micro Mend on Tottenham Street. I left my mac with them for three or four hours and they called me when they'd had a look at it to tell me what was wrong and what my options were. They fixed it straight away and I had my computer back the same day. I've read some unflattering reviews of this shop but I only have praise for them They guys were both so helpful and kept me informed all the way. Thank you and I will be using you again!

Just don't do it!! - Yes, I am trying to post this in as many places as possible. Because I missed the reviews and other people should NOT! Do not go to this place unless you want to waste your precious time for months and months!
I never write reviews for places, but this time I have to. To warn other people who might end up in the same situation. Don't fall for their nonsense like I did! I should have checked the reviews before going in this place, I was already hesitant to give my laptop them. I had looked up reviews for the shop YoYoTech, I told them my laptop's issue and they gave me a number and said this guy will help you. They did not say this person was not even a part of their company! This shop, Micromend has two guys, one who repairs Macs and one who repairs PCs. I don't have anything to say about the Mac guy, because I have a PC. The guy for the PCs, never called back, I constantly had to ring to see what was going on with my laptop. He asked me for an insane price and even though I had told myself I would simply get a new laptop if the cost of fixing was too high,I still went ahead with it because he told me I had to make a decision fast (this was a phone call). He turned it on in the shop, it worked, I paid, went home. I turn it on at home and it stopped working after 10min. After this...it was just a nightmare, he did not supply me with a receipt till after 2 weeks! So I had no proof whatsoever that I used his services. He said he had a look at it, let me take it back, didn't work again, etc. I felt this was turning into one big joke. He was terribly rude and told me that if I didn't like it then the door is right there. I have never EVER been treated in such an incompetent way. My laptop is completely useless now, and I feel very very cheated. Doesn't start his work on time and keeps you waiting for months, rude rude and terribly rude. You cannot treat customers this way. The fact that they have had the police there because a customer flipped out doesn't seem to worry them much. They should take a hint. While there, a girl came into the shop and before she could speak he said 'not ready yet.' The door says 'it's not a right to enter, it's a priviledge.' Arrogant, incompetent, terrible! Thinking about the time and money I've wasted on this place just brings back a lot of frustration and anger.

EDIT: I wish something would be done against shops like this. I have been thinking if this can be reported somewhere. Places like these need to be reviewed to see if they can keep running their business. It amazes me that with so many people unhappy there is no one checking out if this place is doing a proper job! PLEASE if you have had a bad experience here, report it! If nobody does this, they can continue what they're doing. They need to understand that a customer needs to be valued, you pay good money for a service, you should receive a good service. They should be happy to help, rather than be rude and dismissive and showing you the door.
[edit 2] I agree with John D. that due to their aggressive nature even I was scared to return to their shop. The tone while on the phone was often aggressive and rudeas well.

Absolutely Avoid -
I won't tell you the details of my dealings with Micromend, for fear that they read this and trash my computer.

Let's just say I was too scared to go back and retrieve my property because of the aggressive nature one of the workers there.

I've worked in computer repairs, so I know how stressful it can be, but no one should ever be too frightened to enter a store in order to get their property back.

The workers need a dose of valium.

AVOID AT ALL COST. - I took my DVD player in for a simple repair.

After a few months i started calling to see when it was going to be fixed, nothing.

6-8 months later i get a call out of the blue, to come in and collect, not only collect, but by 5pm that day, or it'll cost me more, not very proffesional, and quite odd, no?

After paying my money, and getting my DVD player home, i discovered the small but watchable fault, it once had, was now a totally disabling one. I mean it didn't play, and made a funny noise.

I took it back to them, they said i had damaged it on my way home!? It was wrapped in bubble wrap, and taken in a taxi for the record.

The DVD player is still with them, after a year, i would imagine they've decided to keep it, or sell it, who knows. I phoned several times, each time, he isn't there, or hasn't started it yet, i've now given up.

To boot, they're rude and arrogant.

Avoid like the plague, is most accurate.

Great service - The headphone jack on my iPod broke last night and after having phoned Apple to organise a repair I was slightly shocked (and a little perplexed) to hear that they charge a flat rate of £116 for any repair on an iPod which is now out of warranty.

Cue a few searches on Google and I came across Micromend. I gave them a call and was told that they don't replace iPod headphone jacks as they are prone to breaking but do a "hard fix" which will ensure that it doesn't break again.

I've just come back from Micromend with an iPod which works absolutely perfectly and was repaired in half an hour for £45 - a lot less than what Apple wanted to charge me.

Very impressed with the service and found the person I dealt with incredibly helpful.

A word of warning though - don't be put off by the interior of the place as it looks like a bomb has hit it with bits of iPods, Macs and other electronic equipment stewn all over the place.

AVOID - I should have known better when I saw the posting on their front door: " Entry into this shop is a privilege not a right." Well that pretty much sums up what they think of themselves.

I have used their service twice. The first time I went, I got my laptop back within a few days but the staff was somewhat blunt and impolite in relating to me.

The second time I went was a nightmare. I was being owed a free service so I gave them my laptop. It took 3 weeks to do a virus scan and transfer my files to a hard drive. Moreover, the staff was unbelievably blunt and rude with comments like " If you don't like it, you can go somewhere else." I never got an apology for the delayed service.

I was promised that I would get my laptop the next day several times and during the process I was never called or updated, until the last day. It was obvious that my particular service provider was lying and that he was hardly working on my laptop because the service was free. I had to do the calling myself and they would get irritated and make unnecessary comments when I called.

I strongly advice you not to use Micromend, if you do, you risk being offended. Don't expect to get any good customer service here. These people are obviously cocky (they say, "there's nobody in London who does what we can do" and lack some sense of professionalism.

If they offer you any free service, you may not get your laptop back for several weeks.

BE WARNED.

where everyone else failed... - ....these guys saved my bacon, or at least my laptop.

I've been a mac user since 1990, and on the whole have been pretty happy with their products. I upgrade my main machine normally once every 3-4 years, and think thats pretty thrifty considering how much I use it.

When my macbook pro 2.5ghz suddenly died without warning after a week over 2 years of use, researching few online forums) diagnosed what seemed to be a pretty obvious logic board failure... disaster, (and no, I didn't have the extended care warranty!!)

I few more online forays eluded the even more horrific discovery that typical costs for replacement boards were about a grand!!!! Apparently, up until a month before my problem manifested itself, Apple had a free back to base replacement policy for this (pretty common overheating) fault, and have subsequently deleted all links to it....

Just to make matters more complex I now live in spain, where mac support is worse than zero. anyone who even recognised it as a mac advised me to buy a pc!!

I was about to archive it on the "dead tech shelf" & half heartedly started looking at the costs of buying a unibody (built in battery!!! lack of support of my dvi monitor/ firewire- no way!!)
Then in a flash of inspiration, I dimly remembered walking past a shop (on the way to the Hope pub) the previous December that was organized chaos. The whole place was liberally scattered with bits of gutted macbooks, ipods etc. Then I thought if anyone can do it, these guys can.

Another search confirmed them as "micromend" (get a site together guys, at least a front page) A couple of phone calls later and my mac was winging it over to London with a mate (thanks Pete). I picked it up 2 weeks later (no need to replace the board, the solder had cracked due to overheating - thanks apple)
All fixed for £200 . Much better value than the 2 alternatives above. All thanks to Larry & Russell @ micromend!

so far its the best - been in london 1 year and need my computer for work/life... with out it i think i would be lost. some girl in a cafe spilt some pineapple drink all over it. when i got to Micromend 2day latter he sorted it there and then with a load of switch cleaner and other stuff, talked me over what he was doing as he was doing it. in there for about 5mins walked out with my laptop looking new and working for no charge.
all this bad press hear i think is down to bad customers and not the shop.

i think its the the best in London

Rude, incompetent, unsightly. AVOID - Just to let you know my experience of Micro Mend - I went there on Friday afternoon. Explained the problem with the mouse, and he started going off on one about RAM - "well, having more ram is like having a bigger desk...you can do more things" etc. I told him that I didn't need more RAM and that he hadn't listened to me: there was a problem with my mouse. He then booted my Macbook off his own external hard drive to see whether it was a hardware problem or a software problem. Turned out it was still there on his drive, so its a hardware problem. That narrowed it down. He told me to
go to the Apple Store for a cheap fix. So far so good.

HOWEVER.

THEN the idiot just removed his drive without shutting down my computer first, and now it won't boot up. Went back there to complain but just got insolence. I am now faced with a much more severe problem - the thing won't boot up even from a boot disk and I can't reinstall the OS because the computer doesn't recognise the hard drive. So I'm taking it along to the Apple store for what will probably be a lengthy and expensive repair - and if that fat bald guy had only just listened to what I had said, rather than corrupting my machine. I'm trying to think of a way of assaulting him legally - throwing some eggs?

Just wanted to let you know in case you thought of going there... even if you had a positive maybe he messed something up that you haven't noticed yet... keep an eye on your computer!

What a treat in the big city! - My father told me about this place. I just walked in one day with my broken mac notebook. It would not turn on and it was not a battery problem.
3 hours later I went back to collect my now working computer. Russell, the man who runs MicroMend is a great guy. I won't tell you how little he charged me, but I was astounded at how much I had saved from not walking into the mac store.
This will be my computer repair shop for as long as Russell and his MicroMend store is there.

What a treat in the big city!

hmmmm, not so bad - i am a bit surprised to read the bad review here, i went into the shop because i had a problem with my laptop. It is off of the tottenham court road and i thought it would be cheaper and quicker. when i walked in to the shop i was greeted by a frenchman with a very french accent, i explained that i could not power up my laptop and it had some really important work I needed on it. he said i should come back in 3 days to see if they could do anything with it. I pleaded with him because i needed the stuff off it the following day. he said it was not possible to do it straight away, then came a 'mature looking student type'. "he said let me have a look at it, at worst i can backup the data on the hard drive for you" he took the laptop apart completly in front of my eyes and diagnosed the problem in a couple of minutes and started soldering the motherboard (i was dubious as to whether i would ever see it working again at this point) 1 hour later i left the shop feeling very happy, they now do all my contract work and i have never had a single complain.

Terrible customer service - I had an absolutely terrible experience with this company. I had to take my laptop back several times because their repairs either didn't work or created extra problems which I was unable to fix on my own. They only have one mysterious and uncontacable PC engineer who rarely comes in and no one else is able to help you in the meantime. The whole sorry episode culminated in a series of terrible phone calls in which I was hung up on several times by the owner.
Avoid like the plague.
