Just lovely (once) - Time Out reviewed this place but only gave it a 2 out of 5 review.
The restaurant is neither pretentious nor upmarket (which might explain the TO review) but for those who prefer an uncomplicated night out, this place is a godsend.
The food ranges from above average quality to near-perfect, the staff are friendly but not intrusive, the portions are generous, the value-for-money is good, and the ambience is agreeable regardless of where you sit (some places are terrible near the entrance door, for example).
At the time of writing, the price of the mains is around £5-£6 and being in Crouch End, where there are a number of decent hostelries, makes for a very good night indeed.
Maybe it's an age thing but family run restaurants that take a pride in their cooking and service seem to provide much more of a fulfilling evening than the style-but-no-substance establishments that charge twice as much.

Oct 2011: unfortunately the restaurant has had a Crouch End refit i.e. minimalist (stark), modern (no warmth), user friendly menu (half the choice).
One can't really argue with the owners for doing this; it's twice as busy as before, despite the inevitable price hike, which might indicate the general shallow nature of Crouch Enders these days.
This reviewer is lamenting the loss of another old fashioned favourite however.

Great value, delicious food - Satay Malay has delicious food, and very reasonably priced. All mains are under £6. Seafood mains are under £6 and under and all other mains are £5 and under. Excellent value for money.
There are a number of vegetarian options and the atmosphere is hospitable.
Take the 41, 91, or W7 to Crouch End Broadway and enjoy a night out at a friendly, family-run restaurant.
