PizzaExpress London Reviews

proper service, proper food. - Ok, I know what i'm going to get, pizza, delicious, tasty, not deep pan but nobody's perfect. However, I'm giving Pizza Express, Balham 4/5 for service.
Having been to see my mum and my sister earlier in the evening, my fiancee and I were ravenous, knowing Balham very well we decided to stop there for dinner and I suggested pizza so we aimed for pizza express knowing that my appetite would be satisfied.
When we got there, the manager appeared to be on his mobile outside but still took the time to open the door for us, average start.
We got inside and this restaurant was almost as cavernous as my empty stomach! It was a monday night so there were approximately 20 customers and we were shown to a table by the window straight away by a slightly odd looking italian waiter.
We knew we wanted dough balls to start so ordered them staright away with two bottles of peroni gran reserva(like peroni nastro but with a lovely malty taste).
I like my pizza's simple and meaty so I went with an american(sounds a bit naughty, but really it was quite innocent!) My fiancee wanted her head to burst into flames and went for the etna.
So, cutting this long story a bit shorter, pizza's arrived, the waiter, who was a cross between al pacino and that hunch-backed actor from lots of horror films(don't recall his name). His manner was quiet, polite and attentive to the point that when Lucille's mouth caught on fire from the volcanic etna, he was over in a couple of seconds with a glass of water for her(no prompting required) lucille was amazed, I was impressed.
My pizza was spot on, tasty and just enough to not warrant dessert. Lucille's was excellent too, I'm taking her word for it because I don't like very spicy food.
The waiter cleared our table, I asked for the bill and really stat was that, I had no problem giving the guy a tip because even though the place was dead he was still concentrating on his tables rather than getting carried away in conversation with his work mates.
I'll stop here because I'm rambling, to sum up : Great food, great service, great evening. Nuff said.

Big or small - it's all good - Besides being hailed as the "gateway to the south" I believe that Balham is likely to be famous for one other fact - having the biggest Pizza Express I ever did see! And why Balham - who knows?! Dining there early on a Sunday evening was a quite and seemingly rarified affair. There's room for 100s and there was probaby 30 people tops. Not that I'm complaining as me and friend had plenty of chat to catch up on of a type that wasn't to be overheard.
My thing with Pizza Express is that I think they're stingey on their pizza sizes. Now I know size isn't everything and it's what you do with it that counts. And to give them their dues they are generous with the toppings on their standard size pizzas, but it still doesn't do it for me - I have a big appetite and I make no apology for that.
That said, maybe someone's commented on this before and management has taken note, because they've added the Roma style pizzas to their menu - really thin crust, big and lighter on the toppings too. I went for the Etna and wow it was volcanically hot but delicious all the same. Friend had the fiorentina - looked great, but mine was bigger :)
Not content with just pizza we went on to share a vanilla fudge glory - it was what it was and had tasty chunks of real fudge all over it - yum!
I have to say the service was fantastic and couldn't be faulted - polite, chatty, attentive and helful.
The wine suggestion was spot on (our first choice was not available) and any restaurant chain that offers fresh mint leaf tea (rather than a dry old teabag) gets bonus points from me.
You see it's not always about size with me, it's the little things that can make the difference too
