The Hospital London Reviews

Does what it says on the tin - Normally I think private members clubs are a pretty lame idea. On the few occasions I’ve been into one, it’s turned out to be a glorified wine bar full of gauche public school types and rich chavs who seem to value being a member simply because it endows them with social status. I have always preferred the idea of sitting in a pub or bar that is open to everyone, normally because I’m often the person who turns up drunk and makes a tit of themselves, and this is less noticeable in the bubbly social mix you get in London pubs than in clubs full of nice middle-class members.

But The Hospital is different. It’s a business venue, which is how I came to join as my company thought it was a good idea for us to have access to a central London location where you can have meetings, hire rooms and take clients out for a slap-up dinner. The fact it’s members-only means you can always get a seat in the bar, you can always get a table for dinner and it’s never so packed-full of punters that it takes half an hour to get served with some drinks. The Hospital was originally set-up for artists, TV, film, music, designers and new media types by musician Dave Stewart and Paul Allen (of MS fame) and so it’s a very creatively styled location, with lovely staff and a very accommodating attitude – perfect for meeting some clients for drinks and doing an informal meeting in the member’s bar. The member’s restaurant is good (the food is above average and reasonably priced) and the table service is attentive. The décor is designer, the ambience is very informal and relaxed and the facilities and catering for working sessions and more formal meetings are excellent and competitively priced. Plus there’s always the chance of bumping into a z-list celeb or two, like Rhys Ifans for Jamelia.

If you work in advertising, the internet, journalism, films, TV, music or the arts, the Hospital is a great business club and networking venue. It’s also great for client hospitality and staff meetings, even more so if you’re out shopping in central London and are desperate to use the bathroom. I can’t deny that when you’ve been at a client’s office and they say “where shall we go for a drink?” it is a massive relief to say “Oh I know this place” and be certain that it won’t be full of tourists, football fans, hen parties or too busy to sit down for a relaxed drink.
