A handsome addition to the area, The Empress Of India serves gastropub/restaurant fare. Owners Ed and Tom Martin have previous form, with other successful gastropubs in Canary Wharf and the City, and The Empress Of India should prove a hit. The Empress is open 7 days a week for breakfast, morning coffee and pastries, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

roast chicken not chicken balti - Very impressed with The Empress of India - a lovely gastro pub very close to Victoria Park. Although the building's full name 'The Empress of India' has a long and interesting history (read inside of the menu) they are re-branding to just 'The Empress'. Guess too many people arrive expecting curry!

The food was delicious. We went Sunday evening, so it was roast day. Unfortunately as it was fathers day they were very busy and were all out of the whole rotisserie chicken for 2. The chicken turned up on a carving board with pigs in blanket on the side. We all salivated at the sight of other tables enjoying this feast. Sadly we had to choose mains from the remaining roast beef, fish stew or vegetarian main. It was a split between the roast beef and fish stew for our table of six. We also had starters - I went for duck hearts on toast, a few others had smoked haddock risotto with a poached egg. The starters and mains were delicious!! We even squeezed in a pear tart tartine which was yummily bittersweet. Excellent food from a surprising east end find.
