Fish! London Reviews

Fishy: Classic UK grub gone wrong - When it comes to pricing food in restaurants, how much is too much? At what point is a customer "fished in" by a seductive atmosphere and high prices?

I went with a friend to Fish! on Cathedral Street in Borough Market.

Someone we met in a pub had recommended it for the fish and chips.

When we arrived, we didn't check the menu first, we just asked for two orders of Halibut and Chips. We also ordered two bottles of Sam Smith ale.

We got quite a surprise when we discovered that each meal cost 18.95 pounds. The bottles of ale cost 4.50 pounds.

With a "discretionary service charge" added, the total price on the bill was 52.76 pounds!

We were in a state of shock. Yes, the fish was good, but it was only good. It wasn't "melt-in-your -mouth" fresh. The batter was tasty because it wasn't really thick and greasy, but it was nothing special.

The chips were crispy.

The dollop of mushy peas was not good. The peas had a funny tinned taste to them. I'm not enough of an expert to know if they were tinned, but they tasted tinned and I didn't eat them. The peas were very large.

The service and ambiance didn't match the prices. The restaurant itself is a glass structure with a very modern interior, which is cool. However, the atmosphere wasn't what you would expect when paying such high prices.

The wait staff were polite in their manner, but they interrupted us to offer us "sweets" and then to give us the bill before we were finished eating.

Given the price we were paying, we expected they would have more patience. At least they should have let us finish eating before asking if we wanted dessert or if they could bring the bill.

We certainly shouldn't have been required to pay a 12.5 percent tip on such service.

After paying the damages, I subsequently noticed a disclaimer on the menu:

"Due to cuts in fishing quotas across the globe in order for the species to restock the consequences have been a steady rise in the cost price of fish. We have resisted increasing our prices for some time now and will continue doing so wherever possible. However, due to the uncertain nature of the fishing industry, from time to time we may have to pass on small increases in some of our dishes to compensate for increasing costs. We believe in serving our customers the best produce available rather than serving inferior alternatives, which are invariably sourced irresponsibly."

But, is it worth it to eat deep-fried battered fish at such a price?
