Wharf, What Is It Good For? - The Museum in Docklands is probably the only good reason to be in Canary Wharf on a weekend, and it is good enough that I want to go back soon. While not free, your £5 ticket is valid for a year (assuming you can find it again). Entry is free the between Christmas and the end of the year, and also on the first Thursday of every month in the evening, when they also have special events.

You start the tour of the museum by going up an elevator to the top of the building (appropriately an old trade warehouse with a lot of the original beams and floorboards intact) and working your way down. The very first part of the museum is a bit dull, with text-heavy displays on the very early history of London. Luckily everything quickly gets more interesting as you progress chronologically forward through time, and I was totally captivated most of the time. There is a diverse array of types of displays, including archaeological objects, photographs, models, videos, and even a recreation of a seedy bit of town that you can explore (probably more fun for kids, but also fun for permanent 10 year-olds such as myself and/or those that enjoy piratey concertina music). The special exhibit on sugar and slavery is very well handled, eye-opening, and a bit emotionally draining -- well worth a visit. The big surprise of this museum is how extensive it is despite seeming small; by the time I got to World War II and more recent events (the bits I really came to see), I was already a bit museum-weary, so I'm looking forward to going back (assuming I can find my ticket again).
