The Five Horseshoes Maidensgrove Reviews

I wish there was one on my street - This pub is a gem.

The food was fresh, mouth watering and hardly reminiscent of any pub I've ever been in. The roast looked to be cooked to perfection - none of the dry, watery beef you sometimes get, more like a succulent steak, laid over beautifully cooked roast vegetables, including giant parsnips. Yum!

The chicken pie was delicious, although didn't have the grand look of some of the dishes, such as the sea bass, and even the giant burger. The crispy squid and sun-dried tomato tart (to start)was a melt in the mouth gastro delight. The waitresses were friendly and polite though didn't hover annoyingly.

Sunday papers were on hand, as was a lovely log fire to warm up by on arrival - and before leaving to retrieve our muddy boots from outside and face the elements once again.

It was a delighful interlude to our walk, and worth every penny - £18ish a head for starter, main, bread and a few drinks.

Another reason to go to Henley - I recently went to Henley with a few friends for a night of Scrabble, good company and country living. And along with country living are the long walks thru the pastures and forests which I cherish after the weekly grind of London living. We walked about 1.5 hours to Maidensgrove specifically to try this pub which my friend who grew up in the area recommended.

You walk in and they ask you to leave your muddy Wellies outside, which is perfectly appropriate. The pub is extremely cosy with dark colours, a huge fireplace and couple wooden bars and several tables. Exactly what you’d expect from a pub in this tiny village. Then there’s the restaurant which is more modern – maybe done in the 80s as it reminded me of a golf club house. Not exactly cosy anymore, but still comfortable and amazing views of the sprawling countryside where all you see is grass and trees – no houses or building.

The food was amazing. I was thoroughly impressed. It tasted like what you’d get from a top restaurant in London. I had the grilled seabass with cauliflower puree and spring onions on top of spiced parsnips. My friend had the monster burger with chips and another friend the chicken and leek pie and another friend the Sunday roast. Every last bite was devoured with sounds of pure enjoyment. The owner even gave us our first drinks on the house. What a treat! The staff were perfectly attentive and friendly. It did take a while to pay once they brought our bill and where we sat in the restaurant was very cold but other than that, all top marks.
