The Old Operating Theatre Museum is set at the top of a church tower which was built in 1821. Despite it being 'gore-free', the Theatre Museum is just as stomach churning as the London Dungeon as this theatre dates back to the pre-anaesthetic era. Florence Nightingale commenced her nursing training here.

The Old Operating Theatre Museum London Reviews

Step back in time - Who knew this was here?!

Well the answer is no one, until 1956. I happened upon this the other day as it was the host for an art show preview, and it really was like stepping into another world. Tucked around the corner from London Bridge station, this little gem of a building has a tiny entrance followed by a steep, narrow spiral staircase, only wide enough for one person and with a rope to help you up!

At the top are two little wooden boxes of rooms filled with a menagerie of gruesome and fascinating medical instruments (baby decapitator, anyone?) and a perfectly preserved operating theatre from the 18th century.

I think you have to pay an entrance fee normally, but if medical histroy/general gruesomeness is your kind of thing, it's a must-see and from a general perspective, reminds you just how much of our city is hidden away from the eyes of the world. It would definitely make for an unusual venue for a small audience.
