"Cinema" doesn't do it justice! - Most people refer to FACT simply as a "cinema". It does indeed show films (often a great selection of indies or documentaries etc. not on offer at the local Odeon), but it's so much more than that: art gallery, bar, café and exhibition centre for a start.
Its modern, airy café is one of my favourite places in Liverpool to go for a quiet chat. It's got a surprisingly good selection of (quality!) food, and the free wifi and comfy sofas meant many of my essays as a student were written while I supped lattes here.
The centre's gallery side has a comprehensive calendar of modern art installations and exhibitions, and I've seen a number of great lectures/talks here as well - most notably Tony Benn in the recent Radio 3 Free Thinking festival.
Also key to many people's enjoyment of the place is that it has a fully licensed bar in case you fancy a beer prior to or along with your film. Or are simply thirsty.
