The Museum of London is made up of 14 galleries dealing with aspects of life in London over the last 2000 years. This museum has captured them and put together a comprehensive time line of London's history. The Great Fire of London in 1666 saw the destruction of Medieval London, and with it some parts of the museum. The parts had to be built up from scratch. Admission is free

Interesting but a bit antiseptic - The Museum of London is a bit peculiar. It is ideally located for its subject, with views of the old London Wall just outside and on the edge of The City, but inside it looks a bit old and tired to my eyes. I guess maybe there has been a real change in what people expect from museum's nowadays, but the standard old diorama's don't cut it as much anymore.
When I visited there was an exhibit on the Great Fire of 1666, which while interesting, was quite small - it only took up one medium-sized gallery in the whole place, although I did have a fun time trying on the replica fireman's hat, and the short film narrated with contemporary accounts of the fire was good enough.
The other galleries of the history of London from the Roman period had some bright spots, especially a interactive computer program where you try your best to get a character to survive the various pitfalls of medieval London (my goldsmith got run over by a horse and carriage), and there are some interesting artifacts in the collection, especially the rare Roman coffin that was found in The City some years back. I also quite enjoyed the recipes for milk-gorged snails and stuffed dormice.
The museum has free entry and would probably be a great place to take younger children.
