Non-Place
June 25, 2008
A while ago I bought this book by a guy called Mark Augé called Non Places - its pretty interesting and is all about how supermarkets, airports, service stations etc are non-places - they don't really really exist in any historical or cultural space - I mean you could be in a Tesco in Glasgow and it would be the same as the one in Greenwich - they're sort of built so that you can't really attach any emotion to them.
Anyway I kind of feel this way about the Anchor - yeah the building looks old but because its right on the water it has to appeal to everyone from tourists to office workers and everyone in between - it has no character of its own, which isn't such a bad thing but it makes it difficult to write a thrilling review of it.
Yes its on the water which is great and they've recently renovated the outdoor seating area so there are heaters and umbrellas - inside its kind of dark and labyrinthine but bland and there's nothing special behind the bar in terms of exotic drinks.
I guess this makes it a perfect place to catch up with someone as there's nothing to distract you from the conversation at hand but if you're looking for somewhere with a bit of ambience then I'd head elsewhere.
