Anyone who goes to St. Martin's Lane Hotel will probably agree that it's a very chic and cool place to be. The design is high end modern/minimalist, and there's no question that the location (in Covent Garden) is key. However, for me personally, while I appreciate the aesthetic appeal of the place for the most part, I don't particularly like the pretentious vibe. First of all, there is no sign outside to indicate that the hotel is even there (translation: "We're so freaking cool, we don't even NEED a sign. Oh-- and YOU are not invited, jackass.") Secondly, the hotel staff aren't particularly warm (in fact borderline rude), which for me is sort of a big deal. Especially when you're paying a buttload of money to stay somewhere. Lastly, I'm not a huge fan of the cold furniture and neon lighting in the rooms (as in, backlighting that actually changes from pink to blue to green, and then back to pink again). Might be cool if you're Ron Jeremy, but it's a little too '80's porno for my taste. There are so many cool hotels in London-- I would definitely spend my time and money elsewhere. You might want to check it out just for kicks, though! (But when you feel like a douche bag because you can't find the entrance, don't say I didn't warn you...) ;)

Chic, trendy hotel

This hotel is the place to be seen. Like all of Ian Schraeger's hotels, St Martin's Lane lives up to its standard of high modern & contemporary decor but low comfort. The hotel lobby is all white with traces of modern art and furniture. Very impressive. The rooms resemble the same; all white yet they are tiny with uncomfortable (futon-like) beds. But you're not staying there for comfort. You're staying there b/c the hotel is really cool, has a great bar and restaurant and is in the best location in the heart of Covent Garden.

fantastic location, very nicely appointed rooms, and pretty chill for a boutique hotel. i definitely prefer this to the Sanderson- it's much more low-key, with less of a see-and-be-seen vibe. the staff is brilliant and always treats me sweet- that and the great location makes the high price tag worth it. the hotel restaurant asia de cuba is not as good as it's reputation would lead one to believe. no spa onsite- bummer- but they will arrange to call in a service for you.
