There's something about Wanda... - Years ago, before the EU enlargement, there were few Polish establishments in London and I used to come here when I needed to be reminded of my grandmother's cooking. Compared to some of the other Polish restaurants in London, this one is very continental and definitely very neighbourhoody.

Dinner at Café Wanda is as much about the food as about the character. Wanda herself is usually to be found running around, serving tables and just generally filling the room with her eccentric, no-nonsense style. She can be somewhat abrupt at times, but she has a heart of gold. I told her how I missed my grandmother's poppyseed cake, and she actually offered to get me the ingredients I needed from her supplier so I could make it myself. How many restaurant-owners would go so out of their way for a simple customer?

The menu is divided between European dishes and Polish ones, but all items are served with a Polish flair. For example, vegetables are topped with a light sprinkling of crispy buttered breadcrumbs, just like babcia makes. The Polish platter is an excellent taster, and some of my other favourites include the gypsy pancake, the lamb breast with mint sauce, potatoes and veges, and the chicken breast with mushroom sauce (I think it's called Viennese style).

Desserts can be viewed from the cake counter at the front of the restaurant. The trustworthy Polish-style cheesecake with poppyseeds is usually available, but the selection beyond that can be unpredictable.
