So good I had to write a review....

5.0 out of 5.0

May 09, 2010

I have been here a great many times and on every occasion it never seems to disappoint. Located in the heart of the east end..to be more specific Whitechapel, the vibe is just that - east (y); edgy ; loud ; busy ; and has all the markings of popularity. Celebrating my dad's 62 n'd birthday, a man who's taste buds are particularly fussy when it comes to Indian was unusually happy after his dining experience. :) Dinner included kebabs, chicken tikka, lamb chops, karahi gosh and karahi prawns, with naan. Washed down with a bottle of ultra cold coke, our meal was worth the hour long drive. Here I am 10 lbs heavier, feeling compelled to write this down, and offer you (the reader)a few words of advice.

- book a table in advance
- be nice to the waiters
- order the lamb chops

Admittedly, my review may have been swayed by the particularly good looking waiter.

Best curry I have ever tasted

This place is fantastic, we went as a large group and the staff were very accommodating. I couldn't believe what good value it was too (helped by the BYOB factor). I have tried to go a couple of times since, but it is always packed to the rafters.

Eat on the cheap

I love Tayyabs. The lamb chops are delicious, worth the trip out east alone, but on my last visit we tried the Tindi Masala, pumpkin curry. The pumpkin pieces were juicy and bursting with flavour, with just a hint of sweetness. I've been thinking about it ever since.

The rather unappetisingly named 'dry meat' is anything but - amazingly tender pieces of lamb cooked down to a gorgeously rich and unctuous dish.

This is also the first time I've tried their desserts. The pistachio kulfi was a lovely palate cleanser, and pistachio milk lollies were a favourite.

Tayyabs is simply the best food of its kind anywhere (except maybe Lahore which I think is equally good). Kind being Pakistani, though it works for anyone that loves Indian or Bangladeshi. In any case, this place is damn good. You should probably make a reservation right now without bothering to read on. But before you go, heed these three simple tips:

1. Order the mixed kebab to start and err on the side of extra lamb cutlets.
2. Order a range of the dry meats: lamb, chicken, fish ought a do it.
3. It’s BYO so go to Utobeer or The City Beverage Co before hand and get some ‘real’ IPA’s to go with your meal.

Amazing lamb chops!

Those grilled lamb chops make the long waits worth it! It's always buzzing, even on a midweek night at 9pm, we had to wait at least half an hour even though we 'made reservations'.

The mango lassi was sublime, and everything else we ordered was very, very good.

Go when you aren't in a hurry and remember to BYOB.

Makes me lick my plate

5.0 out of 5.0

December 02, 2008

I have nothing else but praise for this place - on my knees, licking the plate - my own plate and then all other plates left on the tables next to mine.

All is just perfect and if not for the limited capacity of my stomache I would be ordering lamb chops, seesh kebabs and mango lassi endlessly,
And probably wouldn't even spend more than on any standard nigt out in some posh indian restaurants who dare to call themselves restaurants. After visiting Tayyab whenever I pass a place with 'the best indian food' on the door I only say - yeah, right and swallow saliva in rememberance of the gorgeous treats I had there...

Evenings - busy, we were queuing for 1 hour swearing and moaning and getting angry out of atavistic hunger, rediscovering a wild animal inside, a prehistoric beasts with fur on their back.

Sunday Lunch - surprisingly much more relaxed, no-one with killer-gaze at us, waiting for us to leave the table; which was great cause I couldn't move for a while after I had only a tiny bit of this universe of flavour.

I saw stars and indian belly dancers around me. Genuine Gastro-High.

* Highlights: Saag Gosht( succulent beef in spinach paste)
* Mango lassi - not too sweet as it often happens
* Lamb Chops - lean (the sheep must have been fit and active), soft and juicy
*BYO alco:)

Book!

4.0 out of 5.0

I don't have much to add - great food, bustling atmosphere, bargain prices. I went for dinner last week (my friend lives right next door) but since talking to other friends they've said how you always have to queue for ages.

My tip is book! I don't think you used to be able to, but if you don't then whatever night of the week it is you'll have to queue (possibly outta the door).

Also, don't expect it to be a leisurely affair. You get in, eat and leave your table to the hounds nibbling at your table.

Attention Curry Lovers! AMAZING!

Just experienced Tayyab's last night and it was one of the best currys i've ever had and at such a reasonable cost. First off, it's BYOB so don't forget to bring some with you. Second of all, try to get a reservation as the waiting line was about 50 people and continued to be a steady pace the entire evening. It's well worth the wait as the food is fresh, not greasy, and quick. Try the mixed grill starters for sure! I can't wait to go back!

Awesome Lamb Chops

5.0 out of 5.0

October 13, 2008

ZOMG! I got taken here for lunch the other day as a friend was leaving town - supposedly he had a bunch of things left on his list of MUST HAVE experiences whilst living in London and this was one of them.

My first impression was 'shit, I look like one of the waiters' beware if you go here wearing black jeans and a black shirt people might start clicking their fingers at you.

The atmosphere of place is super vibrant, the decor perhaps a little on the naff side but it was super busy at lunch time which is surely the best sign of all.

There were 3 of us and we decided to share a bunch of stuff - for starters we had the lamb chops, chicken tikka and 3 seekh kebabs which are like kofte kebabs. Well the tikka chicken was awesome, super tasty and moist and the seekhs were delicious but the crowning glory were the lamb chops - they had super long bones which meant you could pick them up and eat them cave man style nom nom nom - but seriously they were amazing, super tender and the marinade / spices were perfect - I've never had lamb chops like that before and they were nothing short of AMAZING.

For main we shared a Karahi Chicken and a Karahi Bindi both of which were awesome but the whole way through I kept thinking who was going to get the fourth lamb chop - unfortunately it was offered to the friend who was leaving the country, I should have been happy for him, happy that he'd finally had the chance to sample such delights before leaving the country perhaps for good but it was through gritted teeth that I responded 'no of course I don't mind' when he asked me if I wanted to last chop.

I guess I should be grateful for small mercies, I only work round the corner so I could actally come here every day for lunch and have the lamb chops again and again and again and again and you know what? I might just do that!

PS - Oh I completely forgot that a) its BYOB, very important not to forget that but also b) they do the most amazing Mango Lassi - seriously amazing.
