They serve traditional pub food including Sunday roasts and an A La Carte on the first floor, as well as beers, wines and spirits in the rest of the pub area. The Prospect of a Piratey Good Time

4.0 out of 5.0

December 03, 2007

The Prospect of Whitby is old -- perhaps even the oldest pub in London, with the typical caveats and controversies surrounding such claims. Oldest or not, the Prospect is simply a totally charming and pleasant pub. The river views across to Bermondsey and Rotherhithe are excellent, and are just as enjoyable from the inside on a cold, rainy day as they are from the outside on the deck on a sunny day.

The food is decent pub grub, not really destination-quality food, and a bit pricey perhaps, but just fine for a good lunch. At the bar they always have a few good real ales to choose from. The noose dangling from the balcony over the river, crassly playing on the pirate-hanging history of Wapping, is a tad silly but somehow charming at the same time. If you enjoy classic London pubs and river views, go hang out at the Prospect (apologies for the gallows humour), and then go across the street to The Wapping Project to check out the free art exhibits.
