From the Toon!

I’ve been trying to think of Newcastle exports. There aren’t many… there can’t be. There’s Newcastle Brown Ale and Viz magazine, and that’s about it, or it was until Greggs the baker got its marching orders.
I remember Greggs from my university days quite some years back, a local small chain that started life back in the 1930s, and I was surprised to see them start opening all over London. I suddenly got nostalgic.
However, Greggs is basically a functional bakers with functional bakery goods. Frankly you’ll find better in the nicer supermarkets but for the prices they ask you can’t do too much better. Sausage rolls, sandwiches and pastries as well as loaves of bread are all available fresh and reasonably priced throughout the day. But as I say, if you’re after something a bit nicer then head elsewhere.
