Possibly the worst Kedigeree ever?

1.0 out of 5.0

December 02, 2008

Just had the most disapointing breakfast ever at this now very tired, poorly managed and surly staffed iconic British restaurant. You know how your really really hungry and looking forward to a relaxing hearty breakfast with business on the side? Well Simpsons failed. The experience started with being offered a choice of orange juice or just orange juice, followed by cold toast. But whilst my colleagues ordered cooked breakfasts which were just about acceptable on quality and quantity, a colleague & I went for the slightly more adventurous selection of Kedigeree. Thinking this would be a truly inspired choice, we were served up what can only be described as a bowl of grey gruel. Simply put, the meal consisted of rice, Vesta curry sauce (I kid you not) and a few flakes of fish. Simply the worst dish I have ever eaten in any restaurant. On voicing my complaint to the manager, the response was "thank-you, we'll inform the chef!" I certainly won't be returning. If you do go, don't have Kedigeree and expect to be let down. Perhaps time for a Savoy-like make-over for this British establishment.

Great Value

We went to Simpsons just before a show at a nearby theatre and loved it. Very old english feel with massive ceilings and oak panelling and slightly surly waiters but I tell you what, as well as the surroundings, the food from the set menue was excellent value with very large helpings of e.g. smoked salmon as a starter. Why spend £20 on a mediocre venue when you can eat here for £30?!!

How British Can You Get?

4.0 out of 5.0

This place is classic British food, as in from the bygone era of "boy those English sure have terrible food". Simpsons actually has fine club-style food. The place has kind of become a standard on the tourist circuit, and is something of a site to be seen itself, even without the food. Indeed, although I don't really have any complaints about the food here, it almost seems like you come here for reasons other than the food itself.
That said, go for the prime rib or petrale sole or another classic dish. If it's hunting season, have a go at the game, but be careful not too bite down too hard on a piece of scatter shot! That happened once to my father, who bit into his quail and nearly cracked a tooth.
This is the sort of place to take visiting family and friends from outside the UK to give them a look back.
And there's a splendid old-fashioned bar upstairs that is worth a visit on its own, really.
