Hotness

5.0 out of 5.0

September 07, 2009

Ugh I love this place - to be fair I'd become a bit of a coffee snob of late only drinking in the tiniest new places that didn't sell monmouth - monmouth was big and played out - I was drinking proper underground.

That was until I got a job round the corner from Monmouth and now I'm not in that job anymore I really miss the place.

Yeah it's oddly laid out but actually despite the queues the service is super fast. I guess that's what comes from having about 4/5 staff just to do the coffee.

The service is super friendly and the coffee has always been amazing - the fact that most of the staff are hot is just an added bonus.

Great cofee, shame about the layout

Monmouth fantastic coffee should inspire the owners to re-design the strangely styled interior. Maybe smaller tables, or a door on the side of the building...anyway why should they when the queues are so long. Stay focussed on producing great coffee guys...

wake up and smell the coffee

Working around the corner from this place is one of the great bonuses of working in borough market.
Two downsides to drinking their great conveyor belted coffee are : 1) queueing for upto 20 minutes for a coffee as even though there's an army of staff behind the counter there's almost always too many customers for the place to handle. 2) the cold, big open shop, great in the summer, not so great in the winter.
but aaahhhhh the smell of fresh coffee, you just can't beat it.

Better Beans

4.0 out of 5.0

I recently visited the Borough Market location at the advice of Tipped. Coming from Seattle I live on a steady diet of coffee. Generally I find that I only like about a quarter of the coffee shops that I come across. I was extremely pleased with Monmouth. I had one of the best lattes that I have had in a long time. I'd give this place 5 out of 5 but I have only been once and one of the things I want most from a coffee shop is consistency. I can't vouch for the consistency at Monmouth given my limited time in London. I will definitely go back to Monmouth the next time I am in town.

Buzzing on the Bandwagon

4.0 out of 5.0

July 12, 2008

I resisted jumping on the Monmouth bandwagon for quite a while. I have a built-in resistance to bandwagons. Also, the first time I tried their coffee I got an cappuccino that was bitter and made from over-roasted beans, so I was seriously not impressed. But, much like Peet's coffee in the US, I found that Monmouth is much more of a specialist in roasting for filter coffee. Once I switched to drinking their filter coffee, I finally understood why people rave about Monmouth and voluntarily wait in 20 minute long queues for a small cup of java.

If you go to the Borough Market location, check out the stall inside the market as it (surprisingly) often has shorter lines than the shop on Park Street.

Proper Roasted Brew

4.0 out of 5.0

Monmouth is a hell of a coffee shop. The location in Borough Market is a bit cramped, but it's fine for a coffee on the go, or to wash down with a pastry after a lunch from one of the market's vendors. I thought I understood what a filter coffee was, but not until I had one here at Monmouth did I appreciate what it could be! Flavourful and heady, there are several varieties (all fair trade organic, natch) to select from, or you can go with the house blend as I did.

Monmouth also stocks some pastries and a few other things to eat, but the place is definitely about coffee. You can buy beans in a separate line at the front, and there are a few counters and a large communal table, but this place is probably best suited for take away. Amazing coffee!
