A true hidden gem! - Hurlingham books is one of those old school second hand bookshops that you don't see so much any more.
For one its tiny - the magazine section at Borders takes up more space - however there are books floor to ceiling. Where the shelves and the piles of books rise from the floor in seemingly random order and it takes the nimblest of book enthusiast to keep from knocking them over.
They have a really wide selection - old penguin classics from the 50's (long since out of print most of them) mixed in with contemproty fiction (Ian Banks, David Mitchell etc) - a healthy section on historical warfare and plenty of poetry and classical literature.
One of the nicest things about this shop (apart from the smell) was the fact that there were second hand paper backs from last year mixed with hard back editions printed in 1906 which makes for a rich and colorful browse.
The pricing is very reasonable - I got 3 books for £13 but the owner 'Ray' accepted a tenner for cash - genius.
The best bit however is that Ray started chatting to me and said that if there was anything else I needed - just to give him a call as he has a lock up round the corner with about 10 times more books - I had an hour to kill and so he shut the shop and took me round there!!!!!
Entering this vault of books was even more exciting than the discovery of the books shop - the space took over a whole floor of an office block (basement) and the books were crammed in even tighter than in the shop - he then pointed out a couple of sections and told me to bring anything I liked back to the shop and promptly left me there!!! On my own!!!
I spent the best part of an hour browsing and squeezing between walls of books - a bit of Norman Mailer here a box full of 1960s cookery books there - it was like being in a museum but one in which you can touch and read and interact with everything.
If you love books and browsing bookshops this place is a must.
