Go for the Sunday Lunch!
May 12, 2008
The Peasant not only has a great menu, but it’s a cool pub with lots of windows and big wood bar and friendly people. Maybe it was a saloon at one point as it’s very ornate. It’s in an area on St John Street halfway between Angel and Clerkenwell so kind of off the beaten path unless you know about it. It’s definitely worth a visit though.
Sunday lunches are their best (and the only time I’ve eaten there) and what’s great is they offer not only the usual English fare like delicious roast with with Yorkshire puddings but also honey roasted parsnips; fish and chips; Kippers; and bubble & squeak; but also other menu items such as eggs Benedict or pancakes or smoked salmon as well as a seasonal soup of the day, nice salad and sometimes mussels. I had my birthday lunch there once so they cater to larger groups and completely accommodating except they wouldn’t let us bring in our own cake without charges us a ridiculous amount per person. Would be nice of them to allow this.
For those who want a nicer dinner, head up the circular stairs to their more formal dining room and get their true gastropub, seasonal cuisine. Something I’m eager to try myself.
