To be honest, I've never been a great fan of the curry in the UK. This is probably because I had many tainted experiences at University with large groups of pissed students trying to outdo each other by ordering ridiculous vindaloos.
Having moved to London in the late 90's I was initially excited by the prospect of trying more "authentic" curries down Brick Lane, but again was put off by the oiliness and general heaviness of the food. Most of the curry styles also originate in Bangladesh rather than India.
Having been to India on holiday a few times, I've always been disappointed when coming back to try another curry in London. In India the food always had that wonderful fresh and light feeling that I've never been able to find.
However, this has changed recently with the discovery of the Bombay Bicycle Club. The food is light and flavourful, and there are only a handful of dishes which make you breathe fire afterwards.
Personally the starters win for me, and I prefer to order a selection of small dishes with perhaps once curry dish to share - a bit of build-your-own-thali.
Free pappadoms are included in the order, and delivery is normally within an hour or so (depending on time). Online ordering also makes the whole process extremely easy.
