As an American where dentists and hygienists are your best friends and you see them more than some of your relatives, I was quite surprised to hear that many English don’t even go to the dentist. And when they do, it’s long overdue. So I was pretty particular about choosing my dentist. Luckily I chose right the first time. Ironically, Dr Stuart Jacobs went to dental school in the US, so that was a “check” on the Pro’s list. He also uses state of the art technology including computers where you can see what’s happening in your mouth and digital photos for instant X-ray results. He also won’t recommend doing something if he really doesn’t think it’s necessary (I have some receded gums for brushing too hard so I wanted him to do the gum graphing surgery and he didn’t think I needed it because I’m not in pain); just like my hair dresser who refuses to do something if she thinks it’ll look bad. I appreciate the honesty and not just trying to make a quid.

All the hygienists in his practice are thorough, detailed and friendly and I always leave with perfectly cleaned and scaled teeth with all signs of red wine and coffee stains removed. I tried another hygienist for ½ the price and still had some tarter and staining when I left. So it’s £80 for a cleaning and scaling but so worth it to have it done properly and without any pain.

I’ve even turned one my English colleague’s and her family onto Dr Jacobs.
